somali pirates.....attack french navy frigate..........what do you do for dumb?

Pirates hit navy ship 'in error'
A group of Somali pirates has been captured after attacking a French navy ship by mistake, apparently thinking it was a harmless cargo vessel.

French military spokesman Admiral Christophe Prazuck said the pirates attacked in skiffs late at night some 500km (310 miles) off the Somali coast.

But the command and supply ship, the Somme, repelled the attack and chased the pirates, capturing five of them.

Dozens of international warships fight piracy in Somalia's lawless waters.

“ Once they realised they were facing a ship that was responding and was heading towards them, they stopped shooting and attempted to flee ”
Admiral Christophe Prazuck

The country has had no effective central government since 1991, leading to a complete breakdown of law and order, and pirates operate off the coast almost with impunity.

Admiral Prazuck told French TV station La Chaine Info the pirates seemed to be surprised that the navy ship fought back.

"Once they realised they were facing a ship that was responding and was heading towards them, they stopped shooting and attempted to flee," he said.

"The Somme gave chase and intercepted one of the pirates' boats. All the weapons had apparently been tossed into the sea and the suspected pirates are now being held on board the Somme."

About two dozen ships from European Union nations, including Britain, France, Germany and Italy, patrol the waters off Somalia - an area of about two million square miles.

Although the international naval forces have stepped up patrols in the Gulf of Aden this year, relatively few of the pirates detained have faced trial because of the legal complexities involved.

I read that it was not a frigate, but rather a lightly armed cargo/fuel tanker, but it did give chase (at a blazing 20 knots) but was still able to capture the pirates.

Kudos to the French Navy!

just read this instant on yahoo, it was a "flagship" showed a picture, looked a bit strange, didn't have guns all over the place but still looked serious. and the yokuls from somalia all standing at attention in their little row boat with their hands in the air. so funny. about eight of them. what a yuk.

It's strange for a tanker to be a "flagship" for any operation. It's usually a first line man 'o war, a battleship (in the past) or a heavy cruiser, or a carrier.

In this case you'd expect the operation command would be, at least, on a frigate, not a tanker.

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

That Ship was a Combo Cargo/Underway Oiler Vessel. You can see the Fuel Hoses suspended from the Booms on the main Deck.It refuels other vessels underway while steaming at full speed 20 knots. They gave a pretty good accounting of themselves. How dumb could those Banditos have been to attack an armed Navy Ship? Dumbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

They crew looked a pretty fit bunch, but I don't remember the armament. She's a former German Navy ship, and I also saw her moored in Cartagena.

SS--nice Pic, wish I could see a broadside view. I worked on an Underway Oiler in the Merchant marine. Sending the fueling hose/probe to the recipient ship is quite an operation while steaming at full speed. Not to mention most of the time the ships are rolling & yawing at the same time you are hooking up and refueling while steaming ahead making an already difficult operation more difficult..

Mike I have some old slides from refueling our 2100 class tin-can (from carrier, I think), underway in the Med., and it was often a pair of cans refueling together, with a drag race at the end. We usually won when we cranked up 60,000 hp turbines which shook us all up to full-foward, flank speed of 26+ knots. That's a lotta shit to push an almost 30 year old 2100 ton ship ( circa 1943) to that speed.

I have been wanting to transfer those slides to digital and you now prompt me to do that (but I must find them).

I might have a broadside from an accidental shot, capturing the Cartegena in home port in Colombia. I must look. That was not really possible in San Juan, due to security on the docks, although I went aboard and a training sub-oficial gave me a tour.

We could have kicked those Samali's asses. We not only had 40mm, torpedos, and ASROC, but also 3 double mount 5"38 caliber, computer aimed, rapid fire cannons, with a range of more than 5 miles.

But so much for "ancient/past glories".

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

SS--if you google USNS Hassayampa you will see the Oiler I worked on. My Copy and Paster isn't working too god tonight. It even shows a Pic of The Captain I worked under, Capt Josh Johnson, is in some of the Photos of the first link I viewed. . It was a great Ship and unlimited Overtime, some weeks underway, I worked 36-40 hours OT. Made a lot of $$$ and payed a lot in Taxes. lol

If you were on a circa 1943 Oiler, unless it was retrofitted, it probably had those dangerous Slack-wire Hose Rigs. Man I hated those Rigs when the Ships started Pitching and rolling. When those Steel Cables Snapped from too much tension, they cracked like a 10 gauge Shotgun and God help anyone in the path of the Cable as it whipped back, it didn't happen often, but when it did, look out.

vinod....namaste'....................i think all of these international terrorists...all of them from any country, should be put in chain gaings and sent at the behest of the hague to the clearing of the world's mine fields. clearly, many will be lost, but the world and terrorists specifically need to see that there is a punishment and it ain't life in prison with three 'hots' and a cot. it's the mine fields and daily there will be a news special that "three mine field clearers were blown to bits today" and nine others on the chain were injured and lost limbs. there needs to be a recognizable punishment for these souls who trod on humanity and murder and cause meyhem with abandon. i'm not joking. the world now is full of mine fields, many of which are the works of terrorists. let these international criminals be sentenced to clearing of them. and let the' who goes where' be decided by the hague so that other terrorists cannot with justtification, retalliate to the criminals country as the punishers.

How can this be. Could not 5 or six child pirates with bb guns overwhelm the entire french navy??? Wonder if the white flag was up on the french ship and they were trying to negotiate with the pirates,, or maybe the pirates did not realize it was a french ship and just gave up thinking they were the US navy?? Who knows..... Remember the joke about french tanks,, built with 5 speed transmissions, 1 forward and 4 reverse!! KF

Douglas....on South Georgia Island, left to the elements there, those terrorists would not be getting "3 hots and a cot". They would be hard pressed to survive on seal blubber.

Then there are the South Sandwich Islands too. They are even farther south than South Georgia.

But I like your idea also.

dwmte7 says on Oct 13, 2009, 11:42:

i don't even know where the islands you mention are. the mines that have been laid all over the world are the work of terrorists internationally and they should be the ones to clean them up. hazardous you might point out; cruel and unusual punishment as well.................what about the horrors these various groups and individuals have visited on countries and peoples around the world. chain them together and wish them well they're just reaping what they've sewn.

South Sandwich Islands are about 1400 KM east by southeast from the Falkland Islands.

That would be a good place to send those who survive the mine clearing.
