Willie Colón was signed to Fania records before he met Hector. He was set to record his first record (he was around 16 at the time) when his singer was killed and that is how/why he hooked up with Hector. Also, Fania All Star's wasn't Hector's band, it was Johnny Pacheco's band. Pacheco was also the co-founder of Fania Records. I didn't see the movie. Movie's on musicians are sometimes difficult for me to watch. I generally prefer documentaries about musicians. But I have considered renting it.

I remembered a great documentary called Our Latin Thing about the Fania All Stars...I checked to see if it is on youtube and sure enough it is...You can search: Fania All Stars: Our Latin Thing or here is a link to part 1 and from there you should be able to access all of the others (it has 9 parts in total):

My spirit is absolutely Latino. And I am a musician. I have been on a long journey of discovery for a number of years now, trying to learn more and more about the various cultures in Latin America. In addition, I am a musician; therefore, music is a big part of my life.

Thank you for sharing it all in the first place. It is nice to get a break from all of the sectarian BS that takes place in so many other posts. I doubt anyone will call me a commie for expressing my appreciation for folkloric music of Latin America.

while bumpin around you tube, i found an early recording of shakira in concert with joe somebody. she was a chubby little thing back when.

my music interests are really eclectic. from john coltrane, to john cage; from salsa to hindu. from bach to bacchanal. i love it all. if it's heart felt, i like it. i grew up around american country music. but i was the first in our country folk line to work all over the world and attend universities and pull a fellowship.

i'm sort of the been there done that guy, from hugs to drugs. from science to sanity. the good LORD, just put my iron inso many fires. for years i worked in the middle east, north africa, europe and india. then it switched to this hemisphere. ended up in colombia some 19-20 years ago...the rest is history.

I admire the fact that you've been somewhat of a nomad. Also, eclectic tastes are great and there is nothing wrong with diversity when it comes to music.

I imagine that Shakira was singing with Joe Arroyo. He is one of Colombia's most famous salsa/tropical singers. Before going solo he sang with Fruko y sus Tesos, a famous band that was created by Ernesto Estrada. Anyway, Shakira (Barranquilla) and Arroyo (Cartagena) are both from the coast.
