Awesome, dwmte7. I absolutely love Celina y Reutilio and I have never heard that version of the song. The version I know has completely different lyrics and it is called Santa Barbara (¡Qué Viva Chango!). I also love the songs San Lazaro, Agallu Sola, Pedacito de mi Vida and Tumba la Caña. She is definitely towards the top of the list for my favorite latina singers of all time.

That was a nice song. I found one of her singing a Celina y Reutilio song...so, yeah...she seems to be a fan. Nicely done I might add.

A friend turned me on to Maía, another Colombiana with a nice voice. It is pop music, but it has some folkloric flavor:

Thank god Maía has the sense not to bleach her hair.

Generally, I prefer the originals. The more folkloric or traditional the better (not always, but many times). I love Toto la Momposina, speaking of traditional music.

p.s. If anyone has seen the movie, Soy Cuba, I would love to know the name of the song that plays in the second section that takes plays in the cane fields when the girl takes off to drink a Coke in the pueblito. It has plagued me for years. I just bought the boxset version of the movie...I need to figure out the lyrics in order to google them...
