Carter supports free trade pact with Colombia
August 18th, 2008 · No Comments
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter supports a free trade agreement between Colombia and the U.S. and promised Colombian president Ã?lvaro Uribe to help him convince U.S. congress to vote in favor of the pact.
Carter met with Uribe several hours this weekend to discuss the free trade pact and Colombia’s strain relations with Ecuador. The former U.S. president promised to help Colombia with both issues.
Both the Colombian and the U.S. government already have signed the trade agreement, but the Democratic majority in U.S. congress refuses to vote on the bill, demanding Colombia improves its human rights records first.
After meeting with the former U.S. president and prominent member of the Democratic party, Uribe told the press he is confident Carter’s support will help Colombia succeed in convincing members of the Democratic Party to vote for the pact.
Uribe is currently in the U.S. to promote the free trade agreement.

miamimike says on Aug 18, 2008, 10:13: Yep I saw it also! McCain was basically following Bush doctrine whereas Obama was for change. McCain has been in the Senate for LONG time and is part of the team that ushered in this Record Deficit that straps our economy now and for years to come. Not to forget this Deficit Spending has helped greatly in weakening our dollar. On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

miamimike says on Aug 18, 2008, 13:38: Well as a Veteran I do support Obama and I'm voting against McCain because he voted along with Bush for almost 8 years to underfund the VA Medical System. Not to mention, McCain voted aginst passing the New GI Bill which Obama supports. Not to forget, as an active duty Vet(and I showed up every day for 4 years, unike others we know) I was and dead set against the Iraq Invasion and now the Occupation in which 4000 of our Boys(and girls) have been killed, 1000s more maimed for life and all for nothing. Not long ago they showed the Deplorable conditions for our recovering Veterans at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, minutes from the Whitehouse. This is but one example of the funding shortfalls. Bush should have kept the resources in Afghanistan but no, he shifted them and mucked that Operation up also.MaCain was part of this with Bush so a NO Vote from this Vet for McCain. Prior to 2000 I would have agreed sayingMccain wasn't like Bush but from 2000 on, he is a Bush Clone IMO. Sadly, He lost that great independent streak that made him famous. Lcacique says on Aug 19, 2008, 11:34: Bush will not go down as one of the worst, he will go down as the worst. There is no comparison. Any rational being will come to that conclusion. Of course there will be the usual praise written about him by the party/family faithfuls that care only for their group and not for the country, but even the slightest compliment or the simplest gesture of admiration will come off as absolutely laughable and ludicrous to the majority.
