Funny this one, from the Lonely Planet forums: "...and on top of that, you want us to tell you secret places that are not in the books. Well, let me burst that bubble right away: there are no secret places that are kept out of the guidebooks deliberately by the locals..."

I do think that, on occasion, travel writers will leave out a place. But I don't think it happens much. The best way to find good places is to listen to the word on the street once you're in a country, anyway. Or to go where no man has gone before, yourself, I suppose :)

I stayed at Nakamanda Resort & Spa (expensive, but the service was top-notch), which is near the Sheraton. There are also other hotels in the same area. I spent a week there in February and felt like there were so few people staying that the beach was almost all mine! The best thing was a "Jamaican" bar on the beach near the hotel, which I spent every afternoon to watch the sunset. Perfect view. Great owner. I'll post photos.
