Hostal Tamarindo comments on Are there any Colombians that homeschool Kids, bilingual schools here are a disaster! If you go for homeschooling, contact SecretarÃa de Educación, they will give you the curriculum for the different grade levels. If you need a tutor, contact me and I'll give you the information for a great Spanish teacher. I've been teaching here for 15 years and I understand your situation.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Medellin METRO! Taxi Tips: Make sure the meter is turned on at the beginning of your ride. Pay only what the meter says. There is no extra charge for bus terminal taxis. Drivers are not allowed more than 4 passengers. Do not pay for tolls. There is no additional charge in the evening. It is common for male passengers to ride in the front. The minimum fare is $3.500COP. Seatbelts are required for those sitting in the front. José MarÃa Córdova Airport taxis do no run by the meter. Tipping the driver is not mandatory.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Hair growth Colombia vs. Hair Growth U.S I think it's the soap and shampoo you are using in combination with the water here. Try "jabón de coco"; it's the rectangular white bar of soap used to wash delicate clothes. It has a neutral ph. I use this soap to avoid allergies on my skin and my mom used it to stop hair loss when we moved to Colombia. She still uses it and has beautiful, thick hair. Good luck.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on MedellÃn, station stop by station stop. Especially for those who think that MedellÃn is only about bars and babes. Try J & C Delicias in El Tesroro. The Arepas, sandwiches, fruit juices and milkshakes are great. It's not the traditional Colombian stuff but they have awesome arepas; the marinera with tuna, ham, shrimp and tomato is my favorite. Sushi Lite is 2 for 1 on Tuesdays and the view is beautiful.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Is today (Sat) Ley Seca in Medellin Nope. Dry is dry. It won't apply to Envigado if they don't have elections. Envigado is not in MedellÃn county.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Laundry Service in Medellin No, not just for guests. We also do line dry for $7.000COP. The line dry also depends on the weather, if it's cold and damp, it takes forever for things to dry. In my opinion, clothes feel a lot more comfortable if they are dried in the dryer, it's worth the extra $3.000COP.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on MedellÃn, station stop by station stop. Especially for those who think that MedellÃn is only about bars and babes. Try the Mayorca Outlet Mall at the Itagüi station stop, prices are fare. El Tesoro is beautiful, has a spectacular view of the city, but it is very over priced.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Como prefieren Chicas Paisas que se les dirija ? Usted or Tu "Usted" is best when you don't know the person very well. If you are friends, "Tu" is just fine. "Vos" is the safe way to go.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on My mother had the same problem when we moved from the US to Colombia, 15 years ago, apparently it was the change of water. Someone told her to wash her hair with "Jabón de Coco", the kind used to wash clothes. My mother has been using this soap ever since. Her hair stopped falling out and her grey hair looks fabulous. This soap is also a great body soap, especially if you have sensitive skin and or skin allergies. My dog's vet even recommended it to bathe the dog, apparently it has a nuetral ph and therefore it is non irritating. One more thing, this soap is dirt cheap!

Hostal Tamarindo comments on DO FIVE YEAR OLDS IN COLOMBIA START SCHOO AT 5 OR 6? Your child will be evaluated and placed according to his abilities and skills. Try to enroll him in Preprimaria not first grade. You want your child to be socially adapted. If your child is 5 and his first grade classmates are 7 he may have a much more difficult time adapting. If you want to send him to El San Carlos, ask them what preschool they work with so that your child will be well prepared to start school there the following year.
|
|
Hostal Tamarindo comments on DO FIVE YEAR OLDS IN COLOMBIA START SCHOO AT 5 OR 6? Preprimaria is the first official school year for a child in Colombia. The children in Preprimaria are 6 years old. Many schools offer many other levels before this grade but they are not official. If your child is accepted in Preprimaria at age 5 and then you transfer to another school, he can not be demoted because of his age if he has passed the Preprimaria grade level.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Planning to move to Colombia 1. You'll be fine with that kind of money. 2. The only school in MedellÃn offering an International High School diploma is the Columbus School. 3. Slim. 4. As a native English speaker you should be able to get a job at a language school like Berlitz or the Colombo Americano. If you have a degree, any degree, it will be easier than if you don't. 5. Experience is the most important thing. 6. If you want to be an Englsih teacher, the less Spanish you know the better. 7. Yes, I did. 8. I moved 15 years ago and I'm still loving it. PM me if you want to know more about my moving experience. Good luck.

We're only three blocks from Parque Lleras, surrounded by many hostels...Casa Kiwi. Tiger Paw, Casa Maydé, Provenza, Portón de Provenza, Global and Hostal 34. Feel free to stay here while you hunt around for an apartment.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on There is a sector called Las Americas. It is close to Las Americas Clinic on La 80. There is another neighborhood called La America and the estrato goes from 3-5 as tomtom33 mentioned. This is a traditional middle class neighborhood.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Do you know about Playa Blanca in Baru Island-Cartagena Yes, I recommend it! There is a place called D and E where you can stay. They have tents and hammocks and perhaps even rooms. It is owned by two brothers, Diego and Edgar. Edgar speaks fluent English. Give them a call 311 592 6246, 300 300 5483. Playa Blanca is in Barú. Be careful, it is not to be confused with the Playa Blanca in El Rodadero in Santa Marta.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Cost of cremation in Medellin Colombia It is customary to bury the dead and then after five years the body is exhumed and placed in a mausoleum if the burial plot is rented. If the plot is owned then the body may remain in the ground. All those dying as a result of violence must be buried, anyone else may be cremated. In recent times, in Colombia, many families opt for cremation.

Hostal Tamarindo comments on Anyone interested in starting up a business in Medellin? ByronKostner1969; As far as low high season, from my 13 month experience as a hostel owner, July, August, December, January and February were great. September 07, October and November were ok. The remaining 4 months were terrible. My advantage was that I didn't need to do any remodeling to the house and the rent is not that bad for this sector. I guess I was lucky about the rent because when I got the house Calle 10 was all ripped up and the owners were pretty desperate with an empty house for over two years. I don't really think that taxis are a good business. Car insurance is super high, not to mention gas and maintenance. The drivers here drive on the nutty side and this is an added inconvenience to all of us on the road includining taxis. Don't forget "pico y placa"!
