Word of warning - crossing into Ecuador from Colombia, my iPhone was stolen by the border policeman who searched my bags.
He kept asking how much stuff cost while looking through everything, and somehow in all the chaos, he managed to palm it. I didn't notice until an hour later. I went back and offered money, tried everything to get it back, to no avail. Bastard.

Jamesito says on Jul 5, 2009, 08:43: Yeah good responces... Ecuador has the second worse level of corruption in South America... Normally the police in Quito are ok as it´s the capital and there are more tourists and embassy´s to keep the police in check... In Guayaquil, be careful if you have a rent-a-car, the traffic cops just impound cars instead of controling the crazy motorists. If you a foreigner they will attempt to charge you more aswell. Most police officers have a power-complex and will abuse anybody. Bribery is very common, $200 can get you out of most violations without charge... Bastards... indeed
