Long-Term Visas - Relocation???

Sorry if this seems REALLY basic but there doesn't seem to be much of anything about Cuba, except that the people are the happiest on Earth (take THAT Walt Disney!!!) and friendly and it's REALLY easy to get there from Toronto. LOL

Is there ANY info on long term stays or perhaps even relocation there??? Anything similar to a pensionado visa program for ex pats??? How easy/difficult is that? Can you buy property there? Is it expensive, say compared to Colombia or Panama?

Any info along these lines will be appreciated.

Hi, to answer your questions;
Long term visas are available at the local immigration office. You receive a visa that allows you to stay 21 days. You can extend the visa after that but each extension will get tougher to get. No, chances are you will not be allowed to stay anywhere but in a hotel. Meaning, you can stay where you like, but you must stay in places approved for tourists. You may be able to stay at a friend's house, but this would jeopardize their ability to be happy as a Cuban harboring a tourist is punishable by law in Cuba.

In Cuba, property does not actually belong to the Cubans. It is more of a "it's yours while you live there" kind of thing, leave the country, move to another house, and you lose it unless you are blessed with a PRE (permission to reside outside of Cuba).

No, regardless of what you may hear, it is illegal to sell property in Cuba. I have heard that the government does sell apartments and houses to authorized foreign workers, but that is a coin toss in itself. The gov's total lack of respect for private property should warrant extreme care in any dealing with them.

The only way for a foreigner to properly live in Cuba is to obtain a job with one of the foreign companies doing business in Cuba. Canadian companies, Spanish companies always have positions open for people wanting to live in Cuba.

The people in Cuba are anything but the happiest on earth. I could think of a few words to describe Cuban emotions and none of them have happy in them. Desperate, despondent, hopelessness, future-less, depressed, suicidal. You will live in Cuba if that's what you really want. And you will have the time of your life, or the worse. I hope it turns out well for you.
