Write a review | Edit place information | Add a hostel

The Rio Claro is a small river in Antioquia. There is some great nature around and a nature reserve has been created, and it's a spot for local tourism. The river is very clear and has a marble riverbed.

Entrance to the nature reserve is 2 US$/day. It's a great place to spend a day or two playing in a beautiful nature spot.

They have several types of accommodation, including dorms and private cabañas ensuite. The cabañas cost USD 37 per night including breakfast lunch and dinner. The rooms are clean, basic and open-air, which means they have an amazing view of the river an the canyon, and that you will hear the sounds of the river and the rain at night. They also have a camping ground. They offer many activities such as canopy, tubing, rafting, hiking and kayaking. They give information and take suggestions over e-mail, but they do not take reservations by e-mail, only over the phone. Sometime you have to try several times a day for someone to answer the phone.

You can stay in a dormitory at the reserve for US$ 6/person. (Lunch and dinner for 4 US$, breakfast for 2 US$). You can also camp by the river for a similar price.

Things to do:

Check out local caves, jump in the river, explore the forest.

The Canon del Rio Claro is a rock bedded river where you can go down the river in tires (or just by yourself). There is also a nature path you can walk, and you can dive and swim in the river.

Gruta de la Cascada (cave of the waterfall) is a 500 m long cave you can visit with great scenery, the waterfall emerges from the cave. Cueva del Condor is another marble cave (300 m long) that has huge halls and is great to visit (you'll have to wade through water and bring a good torch).

It's also a great place to watch birds, or jus sunbathe on the marble riverbed.

Getting around & transportation:

Take a bus from Medellin (it's on the highway between Medellin and Bogota) and ask them to drop you off at Rio Claro. It's 3 hours, about 10 US$. From Bogota it's 6 hours. They'll drop you off at the river and you can walk to one of the hotels from there.
