Laguna De Sonso is a marsh habitat reserve near Buga for both local and migratory birds that occupies more than 750 hectares along the east bank of Rio De Cauca. It is managed by the CVC (Corporacion Autónama Regiona del Valle del Cauca) which has published a guide contaning descriptions of 164 species that can be seen there: Guiá De Las Aves De La Reserva Natural Laguna De Sonso (often available at Libreria Nacional bookstores in Cali). There is also a quick ID folder available at the entrance. As well as binoculars/scope insect repellant and rubber boots are necessary much of the year. Rainiest seasons are around the months of April and October with relatively dry periods in between. The turn off for the reserve is a dirt track to the right (coming from Cali) immediatly after crossing the Rio Cauca bridge. The reserve is a long established important stop for international bird watchers visiting Colombia.
