This is the Colombia I know and Love

This is a thread dedicated to the "other" Colombia, far removed from the bars and nightclubs of El Poblado or Zona Rosa, the Chipichape Mall with aging gringos eyeballing teenage waitresses and shopclerks, in short, the Colombia that many foreigners have also met but most haven't and many of them wouldn't find a least bit interesting.

This is about Colombian popular culture, folklore and the provinces that don't receive a lot of attention.

Let's start with the Colombian Andes. This is what I first saw and could never forget.

Cheers,
Desi

it is. All they think is cocaine. sad. I am a Gringo with a latin heart and I am married to a "Bogotana" with a huge family. Mami y Papi too. What a joy they all are to me!!!!

I am planning to move to Bogota in the spring of 09. We have a Flat there very near Zona Rosa.
but I would like to live in Lacalara. with some of the family.

I was there for Christmas and have many fotos of the Lights of 93 and the National park Bolivar Square.

The Music at the end of the Andes clip is performed by "Putumayo" from there CD. Katsada
I saw them perform at the International Craft Fair. this year they are great!!! I'm a fan!!!!

A quick aside or segue into a periferially related topic:

I had a wonderful two weeks in the Choco last month and just came back from an incredible week hiking in the Eje and the Parque Nevados. In both cases, this site contributed to me and mine having a great time.

So despite all the kerfuffle and existential crises in recent days, it does what it is supposed to do. So, I suppose the appropriate response here is, not to get too saccahrine smarmy...

...thanks?

Some of the nicest people in the whole wide world thatI know come from the South Colombian fishermen town and port on the Pacific, Tumaco, near the Ecuadorean border. Tumaco is going through some rough times now sharing some of Buenaventura's problems of being the battleground of drug cartels, paras and Farcs. The sweet, soft-spoken Afro-Colombians of the Pacific coast have been the most isolated and neglected people of Colombia for as long as I can remember. Yet they have a culture of their own, their marimba music of the mangroves, currulao dances, artistic handicrafts, literature and cuisine.

From Tumaco to Quibdó, from Manizales to Florencia, from the Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast to the fishermen villages on the Caribbean, from the llanos to Leticia, away from the culture of prepagos and siliconas, drug maffias and corrupt politicians, to find the true soul of Colombia.

yeah RAAY I climbed to the top a couple of years ago. It was really nice. I'll post pics when I learn how.

To be honest, when I went, the only other tourists were Colombian. Since I blend in with my dark complexion, technically there was not a gringo in sight ;) so don't worry, I doubt it has become infested with gringos. In fact, I don't think you have to worry about that with Medellin anytime soon.

The Lakes

The name escaped me until today when I spoke with my funny little honey who reminded me.
Some of you asked the name and also for you kind folks who are visiting in the future when I am long gone from this site. La Piedra is the name and my times were off a bit it is about 2 hours north of Medellin. They are man made lakes as stated and loaded with little islands and vacation homes.
There is a large rock there that you can climb (I could not because I slipped and fell into a bottle of Family Reserva the night before) to take pics.
Good luck and enjoy!

El Penol is one of my favorite places, I have 2 brothers that have fincas there. Last August we were there for a week, we loved, hiking, canoeing, sailing, fishing, swimming in creeks, and the dam, there are many things you can do there.
When I was a little girl I climbed up, then it was very, extremely dangerous, the stairs were made with wood and rope and they would swing!, and all the stairs were missing some steps and they were moldy! talk about scary!!!!. every time I go I say" this is the last time!

Even though no one dares to talk about the beauty of los Llanos or just because the majority here don’t know much about it, los Llanos Orientales is one of the most beautiful places in Colombia and even more interesting, los Llanos’ natural splendid beauty is not the only attractive feature they have, they also have an unique culture and customs.
Last comment for the road, Llaneros don’t go out to get cowboys hats and other stuff from Australia or from other parts of the world because they have their own there in Los Llanos Orientales.

Pto Lopez it's a pretty town, my husband went there ages ago when the new Road to Villavo didn't exist and to go to Villavo used to take nearly 9 HOURS!!! he said how much Pto Lopez has changed.
we usually go there to eat some fish by the river Meta and enjoy the views. The road is extremely safe and in a good condition, maybe because Ecopetrol is on the same route and there are lots of pozos (petrol) around.

It is very hot specially over the Christmas period, temperatures get to 32 or more..
Apart from the above park on the same road they are building a massive Aquapark, so in the future it's going to be a very busy place or road I should say.
