CARNIVAL
As the slogan states; What Happens at Carnival Stays at Carnival. That said, nothing much happens at Carnival until 3am and anyone turning up earlier may not want to stay for very long.
Thereafter, the music moves up a gear and up to 1800 revellers work their way onto the dance floor. Carnival is arguably the best venue in Medellin if you want to intoxicate yourself with electronic music until sunrise.
Carnival is open from Wednesday to Saturday. Keep a look out for the occasional big night with big name DJs for something more extravagant.
VINACURE
Vinacure is part disco, part museum and part circus.
The owner is an artist who used to throw parties, which became so popular he had to move to a bigger location.
This must-see club is currently closed. Rumours are rife that it will re-open in Envigado in the coming months.
Let's hope so.
El POBLADO
In the 1970s, El Poblado became the new place to live for wealthy residents in Medellin, who relocated from Prado in El Centro because of overcrowding.
El Poblado is now crammed with the best upmarket hotels, hostels and luxury vacation apartments. The best shopping malls, namely, Oviedo and El Tesoro are also located in El Poblado, as are many of the most expensive restaurants and cafes and bars and clubs.
Much of El Poblado is set on the edge of a steep valley which means the temperature is less humid than other parts of Medellin and less appealing to mosquitoes. The hillside setting allows for many incredible views of the city, while views of El Poblado from one of Medellin's other neighbourhoods are quite spectacular because of the sheer number of high rise buildings jam-packed together.
El Poblado has an abundance of trees, plants and flowers making it feel less like part of a big sprawling city. Iguanas can be seen climbing one of numerous types of trees and multi-coloured parrots heard squawking their way between apartment blocks. El Poblado also has several streams or creeks that descend from the mountains towards Medellin's river and although large open green spaces are not common, Parque Lineal de La Presidenta is a welcome exception.
It's no wonder that El Poblado has become a magnet for foreign tourists. That said, at times, El Poblado can feel a bit like parts of the USA, where there is little focus given to pedestrian walkways and too many SUVs with darkened windows. Nevertheless, people in Poblado are predominantly free of the snobbery often found in wealthy city districts.
EL CENTRO
El Centro offers a vibrant and sometimes unpredictable glimpse of the heart of Medellin. While El Poblado is great for sleeping and eating, El Centro offers a host of cultural attractions.
Indeed, you can explore the world's largest collection of Botero paintings and sculptures at both the Museo de Antioquia and Plaza de las Esculturas.
While El Centro still produces offensive levels of pollution, a number of parks, plazas and gardens have emerged in recent years, which provide harmonious hideaways from the smog. The city's jardin botanico is also located here as is Parque de los Deseos and Parque de Cisneros.
The neighbourhood of Prado also offers a quiet oasis in the heart of El Centro and, as the former home of Medellin's elite, there are a number of large colonial houses to admire.
If you want to see El Centro's inner soul you have to embrace El Hueco (the hole) which is a sprawling marketplace good for cheap shopping or just soaking up the atmosphere.
El Centro boasts an impressive nightlife scene, including the best theatre in Medellin and some of the most authentic salsa clubs, including El Eslabon Prendido.
