Poor But Happy Speakers Corner... Say it all here....

Three PBH scenarios, what do you think of each:

a) Free speech - everybody is totally free to say whatever they please. Everybody is game. People can say whatever they want. You can insult people and let people insult you back and nobody is going to defend you because it is a totally unmoderated environment. Most people will be walking out with a black eye.

b) Heavily Moderated - Moderators are strict and even handed. Politically correct environment, squeaky clean, NOBODY gets away with posting offensive material. Most people will find it corny, antiseptic and maybe even cliquish.

c) Moderators using their own discretion/judgement - Allow for very open talk but try to zap obvious trolls or people that overtly insult others and demote threads that are openly offensive. Here is the problem with this. The thread that is offensive to one person might be hilarious, informative or entertaining to another so when it gets moved some people will applaud others will complain. People will usually complain when they get insulted but seem to forget the times they have offended other members. Some people complain moderation is not heavy handed enough but they usually do this when they are the recipients of insults not when they are administering them.

Examples: I.e a thread about colombian women being easy will offend colombian women but a great percentage of the men will glady jump in. A thread about north american men treating their colombian wives badly might yield response from the colombian women but will infuriate the north american men who feel they are being unfairly portrayed. If the mod deletes both, the number of kudos will probably equal the number of complaints.

I don't believe in dictatorships.

I am just asking people to consider all angles and realize the board is populated by people from all over the globe and all walks of life. Since everybody here thinks moderation is so unfair and biased, I wonder what YOUR idea of totally fair moderation is?

CB- I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You guys do an unbelievable job, in a tough, tough environment.

I belong to some boards that are SOOO moderated, they're boring beyond belief. These boards are simple to moderate - say homo- you're deleted. Suggest that anyone is an asshole- you're deleted. Very tidy.

This kind of board would be the toughest there is- because of the diversity of posters, and it's intrinsic freewheeling nature. I giggled just the other nite at a newbie who lectured us about "stay on topic!" in one thread. Obviously, the newbie came from the heavily-moderated environment, and was distressed that we did the usual PBH thing, and took that thread out for a very long walk. It speaks to the quality of moderation here, and to the nature of this board, that the rest of us were giggling at him - rather than worrying about staying "on topic".

Only once have I ever complained about uneven moderation - but that was more to understand desi's viewpoint than to really complain. Des knows very well the esteem i hold her in - and I hope she also knows that I debated her in mutual respect, not because I had any real problems the manner in which she performs her duties.

All I can say is- all of you guys have my admiration and respect. And my thanks for doing such a thankless job.

What's "yenta" approach?

Colombiche, I hadn't seen this thread before, until you pointed it out in "Omophobic" thread.
I believe we are going to get an even spread here; we have some people who have quit the board because we're not strict enough, yet if it had been they who moderated they're first task would've been to delete themselves.

I'm all for free speech, but also for common decency. I have a cultural bias, it looks like, for non-aggressive communication, I hate name-calling and detest hyperbole and all this foaming at the mouth when discussing politics and other sensitive issues. I believe you can speak your mind and call things by their names and yet be decent about it; you don't need to insult your fellow debattors, use cusswords or obscene language to make a point.

More...ltr,
Cheers.

c) a borderline troll who is just wasting everybody's time here like clyde "Papito"?

msaucey says on Jan 31, 2008, 11:42:

This is the internet... Who said free speech exists in cyberspace?....

It is of your own choice what sites you choose to participate....
Everyone should read the Rules before joining any type of site....

The RULES

This site brings together a large community of people with an interest in Colombia. When you write things, follow these two simple rules: (adapted from webdesign-l policies)

No personal attacks.
Stay on topic (Colombia).
In other words, do NOT post:

questions about where to 'find women'
racist, sexist or homophobic comments
harassing or 'stalking' any other person
personal attacks on others
personal details or private information about any other person
postings made under another person's name or impersonating another person
commercial advertising
excessively coarse language
If you don't follow the rules your post may be deleted or you may be banned from posting.

No personal attacks.

Attacking someone’s argument is accepted, even encouraged. Attacking the person who made the argument is unnecessary. We are all here to learn, and none of us can do that while we’re calling each other names or questioning one another’s intelligence. Read other members’ arguments carefully and respond to the points they make, not to their wording or to them personally. Everyone will learn more that way.

We also don't allow attacks on groups of people (women, men, americans, colombians, ...). You can talk about groups of people, that's fine, just don't attack them.

Stay on topic.

The topic of this website is Colombia. It's ok if you start discussing other stuff now and then, but try to stay on topic. If you start a discussion that's off topic to start with I can delete it.

Also note that this is NOT a dating site. It is ok to discuss your personal life (as it relates to Colombia), but this is not the right place to ask where you can find dates.

Don't feed the trolls.

Some people just enjoy starting trouble. They’ll intentionally post false or controversial material, usually worded in a provocative manner, just to get others to pay attention to them. This is known as “trolling‿ and is regarded by some as an art form. We disagree. We think it is dull entertainment for simple minds. We prefer to ignore the trolls until they crawl back under their bridge, and we would prefer that you do likewise.

Keep private email private.

No matter how nasty someone gets in private, how certain you are that they sent the message privately by mistake, or how relevant you think a private message is to the rest of the list, if a message was sent privately to you, treat it as personal correspondence and keep it private. To do otherwise makes you look untrustworthy and childish.

If someone is harassing you off-list and refuses to stop, contact me.

Note that this also applies to the 'Inbox' you have here on Poorbuthappy.

Be respectful of others’ sensitivities and backgrounds.

There is a wide range of cultures represented on this site. What might pass for “refreshingly direct‿ in your hometown may be horribly rude to someone from another state or nation.

Also, try to remember that while this is mostly an English-language site, not everyone on it speaks English as their first (or even second) language. That semi-coherent typo-ridden rant may not have come from a boorish illiterate, but someone living on an island in the middle of the Pacific who speaks French, Russian, Japanese and Arabic fluently, but only just started learning English three months ago.

Do not spam.

Do not post commercial messages. You may provide a link to your website, if it's new to us, but don't use this site for blatant self-promotion or spam. It will be deleted.

If someone is offending or insulting me, that's why there's an ignore button.

Mr. Inbogotá, I don't follow your line of thinking at all. That is not what I said at all. That's your own interpretation of how we interpret our rules. What I'm saying is that long-time members of good standing, with a lot of good, positive contributions are perhaps worth the benefit of doubt that obvious trolls aren't. If that's playing favorites, then be it that way.

Ernie, I have not accused you of being clyde or a troll or anything. Yet you seem to have a very strong opinion about the job we are doing on this board. Most newbies have to hang around for a while before they start complaining.....

Yes, that was the original intent of the post. To huddle together and come up with some good ideas, but it seems like focusing on the negative and pointing fingers so much more fun.

Funny, I have never received a private note from anybody requesting help or trying to do some one on one positive criticism, including some people I considered that I have had friendly exchanges with in the past.

You know what makes this site less enjoyable overall?

It isn't the mods, no way. They are a group that actually contributes interesting opinions, insight, and facts that are consistantly of high quality about Colombia.

No, It's the losers who get off being assholes by proclaiming "Canada is Communist" or "immigrants are not real Canadians" or "all colombian women are easy ho-bags" or "Colombian women never hook-up with loser gringos in NA" or "what colombian women really want (because I definitely know...)" etc.............. the list goes on.

It's the assholes that like to insult other people deliberately because they think it's fun, or to insult someone else's beliefs, nation, opinions, or whatever, just because they can, doing so not with rational debate, but with malice and spite.

It's the frigging moron trolls who have no lives and like to come on and spout garbage. I have read some sad stuff here, posts like "it is night time so the trolls can play..." posts that proceed to make a farce of this site. Actually, that sorta behaviour is more pathetic than anything.

I would like to clarify a comment I made earlier. When I said that PHB condones the bigoted garbage that I was subjected to the night before, that was not aimed at the mods. It was aimed at certain members who make up the website and condone it, who find pleasure in watching pointless arguments, and urge the ignoramuses on. Those who do so, condone such behaviour.

And as one mod pointed out to me, moderators will always be the ones who lose out, they can never win. If they are perceived to be taking a side (and there are always such perceptions), they'll only be accused of side-taking, thus a lose-lose situation, whether they act or not. There's a lot of truth to this. I see it every time I come on the site.

Nope, it's the few who get off on lowering the quality of the website by taking cheapshots and being morons that are at fault. Also the idiotic no-live trolls.

Anyway, that's my opinion, for what it's worth.

Haha, very true CatGirl. Botero has a propensity to paint fat people. If you look at a variety of his work, everyone's fat. He doesn't call them fat, but it's just his style. I don't know whether her stout nature represents anything different from the rest of the stout-natured characters that appear in his work, but the stockings could very well be significant. I couldn't tell you how though... perhaps just visually strengthening the allusion to overall chaos that ordinary civilians are subjected to at the hands of paracos/guerrilla?

I wish to thank you guys for your support to the mod team and you guys who think we suck, well what can I say except that picture yourself in our shoes and give yourself a pat in the back.

When Colombiche started this thread I had some hopes of seeing a little constructive criticism and some fresh, new ideas how you preferred to have this board moderated, but instead we got a returning troll telling us how bad we were, some established members that we thought were reasonably happy with us telling us how much we sucked, but on the sacles, much positive fedback and recogintion for our effort to keep this board functional.

The outcome was pretty much as I thought it would be, refeering to the original questionof the post. Some people do not want to be moderated at all and have a thick skin and would prefer to weather the storm without any intervention from mods. Some others think we should be srticter and go by the book; one two three strikes and you're out. The majority seems to agree, thought, that some moderation is necessary to keep the site functional.

I want to make one small clarification. We are different individuals and with a slightly different criteria, but a common policy. It's only trolls that are kicked out without warning and without consulting with each other. Any established member (and I mean established not just in seniority but the quality and amount of useful contributions) deserves to be warned before showing him/her the highway. For me, at least, the quality and standards of this forum are a number one priority.
And as, Elmo would say,

I guess the interesting part of this statement is "warned" - as in how many times constitutes sufficient warning prior to doors banging on asses, before it becomes obvious that warnings aren't working?? ;) twice? 5 times? 30? depends on the relative value of the non-offending posts, I guess.

I´ve always said the moderators did a very good job. I think Robi had a very valid point in his original post, and it seems most of the moderators did too. I think it is now unfair of him to say the board is ummoderated or that it is a free for all, no one is perfect and the moderators made it very clear they could be contacted privately in an ambiguous situation.

ManInRed summed up my thoughts quite well. Obviously the moderators need to use discretion in enforcing the rules that already exist. I don´t see the examples Robi originally gave as being a particularly difficult call, and I would have banned the propogator. In the long run, of course, it is not that big a deal.

I just scrolled myself half to death- and couldn't decide which was #5. Couldn;t be my 90 proof blood that's the problem, could it?

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Feb 2, 2008, 03:15:

Sorry to hijack this thread one more time but I believe you guys who have been using it as a chat room must be sleeping now.

Robi; I know that you and GIB are buddies and you believe that he has been treated harshly by the mods by allowing first Clavo and then RAAY to be on his case? Both the aforementioned posters have been contacted and I believe the the problem is over for now, at least.

I didn't read most of GIB's threads because I have to chose how I use my time and I didn't even imagine that adult men discussing money matters (dollar up peso down) would get in such ridiculous feuds, boy was I wrong! Now, you have to accept that GIB's way of expressing himself can be rather abrasive; it has gotten much smoother, but especially at the beginning he made many enemies on this board.

Now, I'm not the only moderator here, we're a team and if I didn't apply a heavy hand on those occasions it looked like there was a consensus between us how to handle it.

Anyway, a certain amount of teasing, kidding and chain-yanking between adults may not look so bad on an internet forum, especially between long-time members who know each other quite well. If you're not involved in those exchanges yourself you might not be able to point out exactly when it stops being friendly and turns into stalking. So, I might have been slow to react to it, or we might have been slow as a team, but I have NEVER been contacted by GIB who was the target and as far as I know, the other mods have not been contacted either.

All I ever got from GIB was publicly complaining that my moderation was bad, my opinions sucked and that whatever information I gave was incorrect. Yet I took a clear stance that in spite of his obvious antagonism towards me I would still treat him fairly and warn these people who were stalking him (if that could be called stalking) and if didn't help, I'd take more severe action. It has helped and things have calmed down.

I'm not bitter, robi nor did I want to hear just how great I was. (not all the time, anyway ;)),
but calling this board "unmoderated" after all the hours I put into it, was a little harsh.

Cheers.

hate to beat a dead horse desi, but I think if you read the threads where GIB was harrased, he said absolutely nothing abrasive until long after RAAAY and clavo started insulting him. Only after that went on for a while did he start to insult them in return. So I think that's why he got mad/frustrated and the rest of us think it was a bit odd that nothing was done (until now).

But I also know his comments directed at you were pretty abrasive without needing to be, so I can see why you might have had the wrong impression.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Feb 2, 2008, 04:37:

Until now?
Clavo's been gone for a year now and I warned him long time before he disappeared from the board. RAAY is more recent but I was not fully aware how bad it was until a couple months ago.

Oh, I didn't mean that he (GIB) was especially abrasive in those specific threads, I was referring more to his overall style of expressing himself which earned him the illwill of some posters, long before the actual harassing threads.

Anyway, it's all good now, I was just trying to explain how I and a few others saw it.

And I think we also can see how GIB (or Rubito for that matter) annoy some people (as I am sure I do too), none of us are perfect. But stating your very strong opinion about something (especiallyabout stocks or currencies for god's sake) should hardly offend anyone.

I understand a few of you might be friends with DG, but that doesn´t excuse him of threatening (badmouthing ) posters left and rigth. I do understand Clavo and '----------: Raaay,----------------- if they are a little rude in their words is because they had been treated alike by DG.

Maybe you don't realize how obnoxious you come across in those posts. I'd say GIB was pretty restrained replying to you, more than I would have been.

You pasted the post.........my first comment on it is above.........my very first comment was GIB is always wrong..........yes, this would appear to be me instigating something..........

However, the subject of the post was " GIB is right and the experts are now beginning to realise this......"

My comments were entirely correct.........He posted this thing to toot his own trumpet.................show me one of his endless predictions that has been correct ...........Not alone is it legitimate to point out how he is consistantly wrong..........his comments, in fact, should come with a dis-claimer............

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

I know what you're saying RAAAY, but you just come across as way too harsh and personal, and only with GIB.

The rest of us aren't (too) stupid, we can read and understand when people are full of it or not, it's just not a big deal.

I disagree with sr tertius all the time, and I probably get obnoxious with him, but I at least try not to insult him personally, although when I think about it, I probably failed there, oops.

Besides, EVERYBODY knows a prediction on the market is just a guess, so no one takes it seriously.

As opposed to certain people whom I believe (rightly or not) are apologists for terrorists, for example. I think that's a little more deserving of, uh, a 'passionate' response.

I'm really tired of all these feuds. Who do we vote off the island? Or do we keep all of them and have duke it out here? Perhaps it's time for me to step down.

RAAAY hasn't been bothering GIB since I last intervened. I can't keep these guys apart if they don't start ignoring each other voluntarily. I am not kicking RAAAY out if there is no further harassment. This is getting to be too much like my work now, no fun. I'm all talked out on this topic and have no further suggestions.

There are two sides to the coin

The use of the freedom of expression

The ABUSE of freedom of expression

The second one can be applied when comments are done base on gossip, but when you got power like manipulating the media, Caracol, RCN, etc things get worse because you are sending information to many people at the time.

In the internet owners of websites their assistants, when given little power and do edit or delete your threads or posts without any just cause, then the freedom of expression is being put into test.

On a second though maybe Jaime Garzon thought the same way "life goes on", I guess not.

I think it would be a great boon to the purpose of the forum for the moderators to be much more active about deleting off topic comments within a thread. This would eliminate a lot of stupidity and sniping. It would encourage a freer exchange of real and useful information and commentary. People seem to be confused about whether this is a chatroom or a forum and threads drift and deteriorate and become useless far too frequently. How about a report this comment link? I'd bet it would take Peter less than 10 minutes to put into place. I don't think the actual POST topics are nearly as big an issue. It's not that big a deal to ignore a post that isn't interesting. And, I think that a few weeks of diligently ensuring that comments stay on topic might get even the lamest smart-asses to clean themselves up and allow everyone to get better use from this board.

Examples? As I type this, Albatross is looking for advice on what sort of engagement ring to give his Colombian fiance. This is obviously important to him and a very valid culturally motivated request. This decision is going to last a lifetime. Yet, someone felt it necessary to post this comment: "you must be a troll" Why? I see that frequently enough that I believe it's a symptom of a problem here. If you don't "get" the question, move on. Why on earth would you presume that "not important or valid to your mind" equals "not important or valid AT ALL"? Someone alse posted the scoffing response "Get married....jajjajjajajajajjaaa....... married.......jaajjjajaajjajajajajaaaaaa..." Again, why would someone do that? As it turns out, the board is doing a great job of not allowing these inanities to interfere with the thread, but that is not always the case and some people just don't know when to give it up. Someone once asked something like "What do Colombian children dream of becoming when they grow up?" It had never occurred to me to ask this, but it was a fascinating thing to ponder: what are the dormant dreams of children that help shape the Colombian psyche? This would certainly be an appropriate place to seek an answer. I believe the first comment was "You're kidding, right?" followed closely by "this can't be serious" and closely again by "this thread needs to be hijacked". It was all downhill from there, not a single genuine response. To me that's sad. Lots of posts never become threads, and that's ok, but that one had no chance because of the self-centered childishness of just a handful of nitwits. That's a shame. Oh, it's important to have fun and to not take everything in life too seriously, but does believing that relieve us of the need to be civilized and respectful? Do you honestly believe behavior like this doesn't have larger consequences as far as discouraging people from participating? I don't know about the complaints of lack of "fairness", but in this regard, I believe more moderation could be helpful.

Just my two cents worth of free speech.
