*What does this mean?
HOW TO CONVERT ROOM RATE TO DOLLARS: Nov,2 2009 The market and banks are runing on rate of 1,993 PESOS PER DOLLAR

How to figure out room rates:
45,000 / 1,999 = 22.51
45,000 Pesos is equal to 22.51 US Dollars
* http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=USDCOP=X
(this is a great site to keep up to date on the struggling dollar)

USUALLY you want to focus on the pesos as far as the cost goes for the apartments, since the dollar is falling so much this year. GET YOUR QUOTES IN PESOS. :-) Some VIP apartments accept payment in dollars or pesos, but just be sure there prices on the INTERNET are up to date.

An economic apartment is a great way to save money and use it on important things like taking out the ladies, and having a fun time! This is an older but very spacious apartment, with huge balconies overlooking El Poblado. So, don't pay gringo rates, and waste your money on those expensive VIP apartments. Save your money for going on dates with the ladies!

I am a single 40 year old guy that discovered Colombia 3 years ago. A real blessing in disguise! Come on down and visit, meet the expat community or just hang out with the beautiful people of Medellin. Always glad to show around other visiting gringos and foreigners!

What a lot to read! I think the main points are:

"MONTHLY ROOM RENTAL RATE... 1.350.000 PESOS"

"You can come to Medellin and spend money like crazy, or make a few good choices and conserve your money."

Thank you.

I pay 500.000 pesos ($250.00) a month for a big room in a shared apartment right behind Parque del Poblado, with all the same amenities. With respect, I think $675 is extremely expensive for a room in a shared place in Medellin, more like what one would expect to pay in Boston, LA, or DC.

You're right... I'm sure the apartment in question and what comes along with it are superior. But I've still never seen a room in a shared place for more than 500USD here. This apartment must be amazing.

Cali2005 says on Nov 3, 2009, 08:28:

rent on the apartment runs 1,000 US dollars per month with utilities so its not a rip off. Its also a furnished room. This is a CHEAP ROOM. 22 bucks a night is CHEAP!

SO FOR PEOPLE NOT FAMILIAR WITH RENT PRICES IN NEW APARTMENTS IN POBLADO THEN ITS ALOT.

If your in an old apartment with grannies furniture sure you can get a better deal. Most apartments this size without furniture start at 2 million pesos per month.

Depends on what your looking for. If you like sleeping in a new queen bed in BRAND NEW APARTMENT with no mold like some of these older places then your going to pay more.

Then on the other hand if you want to stay in a moldy old apartment buidling with grannies furniture, old beds, then go right ahead its a free world.

For the neighborhood the price is cheap. A brand new building in El poblado is not going to get any cheaper.

Cheers.

James

Hi James,

No offense intended... I was just a bit surprised. I tried to delete my comment but I don't know how.

I'm sure it's a really lovely place. I hadn't considered the costs of living in a completely furnished, modern apartment in probably the nicest part of the city. You put things in perspective.

Good luck!

thanks for the polite comments. there are cheap places and then unfortunately Medellin has expensive apartments going up now. It would be nice if prices dropped in Medellin like in Miami after the economic downturn but so far the real estate seems to be holding fairly stable.

I could live cheaper with my family in Wyoming but its hardly a metropolis, and frequently dips below negative 20 degrees farenheight. Cowboys tell me that it gets pretty lonely up there. Im thinking paisas are much better company than sheep. jeje

I choose Medellin, unfortunately el poblado is pricey.
