i don't know about West Venezuela, but Caracas is now considered the most dangerous city on earth and that's including Baghdad. I use to love going to Venezuela but criminals are running rampant and with almost absoulte impunity. The west side of the country should be safer than Caracas.

Probably not. Although don't carry large sums of cash. The national guard in the venezuelan border might frisk you and so might the police in the interior for no reason other than to get some cash. the thing that sucks is if you use your atm card you'll get the official exchange rate that is one third the real rate. that means that you are forced to carry dollars from Colombia if you want a good rate.

cstew- i hadn't used my atm card there since 2002. didn't know you couldn't use it anymore.

misterfinger- i don't know if its easy to change dollars in merida. in Maiquetia airport in caracas its easy, but i don't know in merida.
i would take dollars to cucuta and look at this site http://bonosvenezuela.blogspot.com/
then do the math. if you can get bolivares close to this your getting a good deal. last month the bolivar was over 6.3 to one dollar but the recent bond offering lowered the rate it seems.
in pesos it might be .40 to one bolivar.

merida is a lovely place. unfortunately i don't have any friends there, so i normally carry on up to maracaibo, where i have a few friends. a lot of people of quite negative about it, but i have really enjoyed it...though it's probably because i'm going out with friends and therefore much it's more enjoyable

i'd advise you to change your money in cucuta before you arrive in venezuela.

is the 'actual' exchange rate really 3 times more than the 'fixed rate?

Caracas is not like any other latin city. 56 murders over the past weekend. 40 is now the new normal for a weekend. with over 120 murders per 100.000 habitants its over 6 times more dangerous than bogota. 90% of murders are not solved and the police is incredibly corrupt. it wasn't this bad even 4 years ago, but i was there recently and spoke with old friends that are looking to leave the country not because of politics or economics but because they don't feel safe anymore.

Depends where you live in the city, if you work, use public transportation ect. Talk to some Venezuelans who live in Caracas in the better upscale neighborhoods, they report No Problema. In the lower barrios, lots of Problemas. Same for Mexico City, some claim its full of crime, others love it. In 1994 I heard the same about Bogota, full of crime ect. I payed attention to No One, went and saw for myself. Never had a problem and back then Bogota was rated VERY high crime by the "So Called Experts". In 1994 the Bogota Police were also classified as very Corrupt to put it mildly. How many Murders(even today) in Bogota, Medellin or BQA are solved with the Perps ending up behind Bars? Its a subjective call at best and no matter how safe you think you are, you can always be in the wrong place at the wrong time and get nailed by circumstances beyond your control. Here in Miami, we see Homicides in the so called "Best Neighborhoods" like Coral Gables, Kendall as well as not so good barrios like Overtown, Liberty City ect.

just a few comments. There were 30 to 40 homicides per week-end in Caracas when I first arrived in venezuela 15 years ago!! If you are not involved in drug trade, gangs, and don't go to slums where you have nothing to do anyway, you have very little to worry about in Caracas. for a tourist, the main risk is to take a fake taxi from the airport. FYI I have a receptive agency in vzla for the last 12 years, so I see quite a bit of tourists every year. I don't know why people on this board are so inclined at going to Maracaibo... there is nothing to do or to see there. Tourists go here: in that order: Ciudad Bolivar (to see Angel Falls and the Gran Sabana), Los Roques, Merida, Choroni (close to Caracas), Mochima, Santa Elena (to trek Mount Roraima), the Orinoco Delta. I forgot Los llanos (booked from Merida) and Margarita. Maracaibo doesn't figure in any guide book and it doesn't make sense to go there, unless you are on business or visit friends.
Then if you are really interested in visiting Venezuela, check a more open-minded forum like Lonely Planet's thorntree for example...

Caracas is defenitely dangerous. I made many friends there because I use to send playstations from miami to Venezuela back in 2000. These are some of the victims i've known. one friend was killed when he showed his toyota truck he advertised on the newspaper. He was unarmed and the crooks shot him. Another Argentinian friend making tons of money working for Loreal left the country saying it was unsafe and that it just wasn't the same place that is was a few years ago. Another friend got mugged in the Sabana grande metro station. Mind you, thats people I know. I live in Bogota and I don't personally know recent victims of crime. ( Of course there is tons of crime in Bogota ) but not like Caracas..
I love Venezuela but statistics don't lie. of course it is safer in the good neighboorhoods, but in Caracas the problem is not drug related like in Medellin. The problem is armed robbery, armed carjackings, armed bank robery, express kidnappings etc. so it does affect regular people.
Why do you think there are so many wealthy venezuelans in miami. It really is a shame. it's a wonderful country and is very easy to make money there. If it wasn't the way it is now i would be living there.

Changing dollars in Mérida is no problem, just ask around at a few hostels. Everyone knows at least one person that does it.
If you run out of money in Mérida and have extra time, it's cheap enough (45 bolívares, about $8, each way) to run back to the border and use a Colombian ATM to get pesos, then change for Bolívares.

Couple robbed after winning $10,000 at Broward casino
A Southwest Miami-Dade couple was robbed outside their home Wednesday night as they returned from a Broward County casino after winning $10,000, police said.

One of the robbers emptied Gaston Rodriguez's pants pockets of $20,000 while the other robber attempted to steal Yolanda Rodriguez's purse, according to Miami-Dade police.

The couple, in their mid-60s, received minor injuries. Paramedics treated them outside their home in the 2800 block of Southwest 128th Avenue.

The robbers, who covered their faces with bandannas, left the area on foot, police said.

Investigators declined to identify the casino the couple went to.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St--must be a sense of adventure, everyone has a different tolerance level for danger, perceived or real. Myself and living in Miami, I go into Little Haiti on a regular basis. My Doctor's Office is located there by 79th & Biscayne Blvd, just a few blocks from the Old Main Immigration Building , he in fact is Haitian. Our Bicycling Group holds Week-end rides thru parts of Liberty City and Little Haiti. On my first trip to Bogota in '94, I stayed at a Hotel in La Candelaria(old 18 th century remodeled Church) I'm aware of my surroundings and never had a Problem in La Candelaria or Little Haiti.Sometimes its NOT the neighborhood, its destiny and a simple matter of being in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time and your Number is called. Good examples of this a Buddy of mine(colombian) was sequestered in a Taxi across from the Santa Barbara Mall in Bogota--Nice Barrio but not for him that night. Another time a Young Colombian Girl was picked up by a group of Latino Thugs and was raped and murdered on Miami's South Beach. Her Number was up. Other times Bombs were set off in Zona Rosa and Club Nogales(sp) in Bogota. Both upscale neighborhoods. Not always the neighborhoods but for some, its the sense of Adventure from the safe and predictable, for me anyhow. Personally, I try and avoid areas where other American Tourists visit due to the corresponding higher prices found in these locales. Not to forget, I travel to see the natives not to congregate with my fellow Americans so I avoid them whenever possible.

I live here right on SoBe for 20 years and I have seen Miami Beach transform from a old folks scarface looking place to the "Riviera of the US" I can tell you that the COPS HERE do NOT F around one bit. If there is any kind of fighting or debauchery or public drunkenness you can bet that the cops are on it so fast and they waste no time in kicking your ass first and then locking you up. I dont think there is some kind of conspiracy to quell any information here at all. In a matter of fact you hear news about South Beach daily on all the local news channels. Do you remember they just caught that guy who sexually assaulted that girl in the alley by 10th and Washington a few months back. It was all over the news when he jumped out of the window of an apartment on 14 and Euclid lol. The Colombian girl and boyfriend where kidnapped by thugs at knifepoint and the she was assaulted and raped on the way driving up FL Tpke in one of those 4 door pick ups I think. I read the Miami Herald's Neighbor's Crime Report weekly and I see a lot of crime occurring on the Beach. I truly belive a lot of the high level crime doesn't make the news because it would scare off the tourists. Seems like every other week a Miami Football or Basketball/Baseball player is getting arrested in SB for one thing or another. I remember not long ago where that MidEast Guy was shot because a MB Cop thought the guy had a Gun when in fact it turned out to be a Cellphone. For me the best thing about SB are the Art Deco Hotel's Architecture and the MB Cinemateque on Espanola way, other then that, I'm rarely there due to plastic artificial Wanna-Be types that frequent the area just to "Be Seen". It was fun for a few months when I first moved to Miami in 1995 but I soon tired of the place, lack of parking, Beach Towing Vultures and the High Prices. Head off the Beach you get the same meal for 1/2 the price,,,And free parking in many cases. The Good Colombian Tabernas aren't located on the Beach btw,,,
