Hmmm, now thats a tough one.. let me think... I would say its about as safe as Buenaventura!

It depends on where you go. If you stay on the beaten tourist tracks; Capurganá, Bahia Solano, Nuquí for example all is safe and sound but if you head out beyond those destinations the risk increases by leaps and bounds.

anyone finding themselves in buena ventura, there's only one hotel worth it's salt and a night's stay. that's hotel estacion. and you want to stay in the old wing...remember that.

From my high rise apartment,I look out every day at the mountains of Choco.Unfortunately that,s about as close as it gets.None of my Colombian neighbours or friends who include ganaderos, would consider venturing there. If they have business to do they send an employee to Choco.A lawyer, who is a personal friend was for a while Notario Primero in San Jose de Palmar, until he was run out of town with death threats.Americans and Choco?A dangerous mix.

the old wing is the oldest part of the building, ask at the desk. the other part is new, regular, etc. just tell them at the desk. the rooms are nicer and larger.

Hotel Estacion is cool,if overpriced.Walk 30 yards from the hotel ,and the odds are you,ll get robbed in the street Americans, listen to the advice for travellers from your Government about Buenaventura ,or pay the price and don,t moan about it aterwards on PBH.

anti.......there's only two things memorable in my various visits to bv........one, i had an intimate affair with my secretary who travelled with me everywhere, and the slate mtns you drive through when coming from cali. the estacion was good in that without it, you would be in a world of hurt.

anti, since you seem to be in the know en re b.v. have you ever walked down by the muelle, or better, in it? remember how your shoes stick to the ground with every step from all the sugar? it's really strange.
