MEXICO CITY, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The air force of Guatemala and the U.S. Navy had detained a submarine with a load of 10 tons of cocaine, local media reported on Thursday.
The submarine, directed by three Colombian and one Mexican citizens, was detained on Wednesday at some 180 nautical miles (around 330 kilometers) off Puerto Quetzal in the southern department of Escuintla, the Guatemalan Interior Ministry said.
The commercial value of the cocaine was at 1 billion quetzals (some 120 million U.S. dollars). This has been the first detention of a submarine loaded with drugs in Guatemalan territory.
Guatemalan ships from the Naval Base of the Pacific saw the submarine and requested backup from the U.S. Navy and the Guatemalan air force, the ministry said.
Guatemalan authorities said the submarine aimed to arrive in Guatemala and then in Mexico and the United States would be its final destination.

jb_fastpitch says on Oct 23, 2009, 10:08: My mind is racing in 100 directions right now. Where does one purchase a submarine with the capacity to carry at least 4 crew and 20,000 lbs of cocaine? How much would it cost? Who else is involved? In what US port would you offload 20,000 lbs of cocaine from a submarine without attracting attention? Long Beach is now owned by the Chi-coms. Do they have a used Submarine lot? Where would they locate it? Possibly the Chi-com/ Panama Canal???? Choose Liberty, there is no such thing as equality. 1 funny, 0 helpful. |

nevertrustapaisa says on Oct 23, 2009, 11:29: jb, Subs are built and launched along uninhabited parts of the South Pacific Colombian coast. The cost averages around US $1M for a basic model - a cheap price in a narco economy. The basic models ride just below the surface. They either unload along uninhabited parts of Guatemala, or offload to a boat mid-sea. Most of the shipments end up crossing the under-staffed, under-armed, US-Mexico border.

carplane says on Oct 23, 2009, 12:45: Actually, Playboy had a very informative article on cocaine subs a few months--well, perhaps up to a year ago. Apparently, they had to catch one to see what it was all about. They have quick open ports, so if they are caught...they are rescued and have no evidence.
