furnished apartment wanted in Santa Marta for 2-3 months

Hi there

Wondering if anyone can help. Myself and my partner are looking for a reasonably priced furnished place to rent in or around Santa Marta for the next few months. We have both been travelling and working in South America for the last couple of years so hyped up gringo prices are not an affordable option for us. However, clean and in a nice safe area close to amenities would be great. Any help would be really appreciated.

I do not know how much you are prepare to pay to rent the place, or how big or if you want a house or an apartment.

In 'Metrocuadrado', there are 50 apartments in Santa Marta for rent ranging from around $200,000 a month for 1 bedroom 40 square metre to approximatelt $2.2m

We are kinda wanting to do it as cheaply as possible we were thinking that for about $350,000 a month we should be able to live in something a little larger than a shoebox but we are new to the area and are not so sure what to expect. Is it easy enough to negotiate the rent? Do you know how things work in terms making initial payments and contract ect? Anything you can tell me will be a great help. Thanks elaine

I went to the site but those are not monthly rentals but per night rental from 200k to 2.2 on that website.

During the run-up to the high season, not many landlords will consider renting monthly rather than nightly when they can make a major killing. Most of these nightly ads will change early to mid-january.

Try the link below and go to the website of any of the inmobilirias that are listed. They should have a better grasp on monthly rentals that are actually available.

Obviously it's a funny time of of year, i don't have any papers in place but i'm hoping to do a little work while i'm there, ya know so i can eat and that. You might try the language institutes there or just put an add in the paper. I ahve seen a few adds around like that. I don't know if they work or not but When people ask you what you do here. I recomend you tell them that you teach English. Keep your hourly at about 20K and I bet you find work.

What is reasonable to you? In Rodadero (next door) a friend lives in a great building with 2 x pools, security, sea views, very near to supermarket, 5 minute walk from the beach for 800,000 pesos a month and you can find cheaper. Very good price I think - probably cheaper in Santa Marta.

that is a good deal. The thing that Elaine and me might run into is the paperwork. Is it a pain like everywhere else or do they cut a gringo some slack on the whole owning property in Santa Marta in order to rent and all those silly papers needed............?

in Rodadero it is easy - they rent to foreigners without all the #$%&; at first my friend had to pay a few months up front - now he is just month by month. There are 3 gringos in the same building and it is very nice. For that price though it is a 1 x bedroom, furnished without washing machine. Washing machine delivery was 7 k I think for 4 hrs.

hey this is starting to sound better but to be perfectly honest its still to much for us. but we are gonna be there tomorrow and have arranged to stay with a mate for the first few days while we try to find a place and job. I heard that it is easy to rent something now but once it gets to 20th December your out cause they can charge a monthly rate for one night. Also was told that cause we are only looking for a 3 month rent we will find it hard simply cause its high season. The thing is we are on tourist visa and have already been in colombia for over 2 months and had to renew it. Oh by the way do you know if we are allowed to stay 6 months each calender year or is it 6 months out of every 12??
oh well these things usually fall into place Im sure something will come up.

It is true that high season is upon us. I think it will be very hard to rent anything long term right now. Now at the end of january I bet the market is going to be flooded with rentals and a long term renter would be welcome and prices would be cheaper, my bet.

oneforyour.. Not in SM, however Arrecife (sp) in Tayrona had rideable waves (not good but they were there - dangerous beach) and on the other side of Tayrona there is a new sirf school that has opened.

Fishing you could do anywhere I guess. Lots of water sports around - it is a great area - I like a big (ish) city to live in otherwise I would be living there in a hearbeat!!

it is per calender year .. The head of DAS in Santa Marta told me that ...I had no problems but i also went to the frontier just for the hell of it .. you can do it in a day .....

Since you are in SM ..get one of the local newspapers ..the cheapie ones where the locals advertise ....

the other option is to walk around the area ...also jst up the road walking distance is Gaira ...they have cheap rents there ...

Drop into Bar Lilias and ask for Patrick .. he got a really good deal on aplace ....nice and cheap ...also as some owners will be wanting to sell they will rent to you until they sell it ....

Smile and everyone will wonder what they are missing.
