FARC MAXIMUM LEADER MANUEL MARULANDA 'TIROFIJO' IS DEAD!!

Manuel Marulanda Vélez 'Tirofijo' estaría muerto, afirma la revista Semana
La muerte se habría producido por causas naturales el pasado 26 de marzo, según lo afirmó el ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, en una entrevista.


El funcionario no precisa más detalles, pero atribuye esa información a una fuente "muy confiable" de inteligencia.

No se trata de la primera vez que Marulanda es dado por muerto. Ninguna fuente del Gobierno o de los organismos de seguridad ha confirmado la muerte de 'Tirofijo'

Pedro Antonio Marín, fundador y máximo jefe de las Farc, de 78 años, sería reemplazado en la cúpula de la guerrilla por Guillermo Sáenz 'Alfonso Cano'.

En su entrevista, Santos asegura que 'Tirofijo' "Debe estar en el infierno", al señalar que "esa es la última información que tenemos y que estamos corroborando".

Al ser preguntado por las causas de la muerte, Santos dijo desconocerlas. "En esas fechas hubo tres bombardeos fuertes en donde se pensaba que estaba 'Tirofijo'. La guerrilla dice que de paro cardíaco. No tenemos pruebas ni de lo uno ni de lo otro", aseguró a Semana.

El director de Semana, Alejandro Santos, reveló por su parte que la muerte de "Tirofijo" se habría producido el pasado 22 de marzo.

Marín nació en Génova, Quindío, el 12 de mzyo de 1930 y fue uno de los fundadores de las Farc en 1964.

De confirmarse, esta sería la tercera muerte de un miembro del secretariado de las Farc en el mes de marzo pasado.

Luis Edgar Devia 'Raúl Reyes' murió en un bombardeo de las Fuerzas Militares de Colombia el pasado primero de marzo en un campamento en Ecuador, a 2 kilómetros de la frontera con Colombia.

Una semana más tarde, falleció 'Iván Ríos' a manos de 'Rojas' uno de sus lugartenientes en límites entre Caldas y Antioquia.

Rumores de su enfermedad
Desde hace cuatro, comenzaron los rumores de que estaba enfermo de cáncer y hay testimonios de que salió muy enfermo de la zona de distensión. Sin embargo, tampoco hay confirmación de su muerte.

En la última década, al guerrillero más viejo del mundo, 'Manuel Marulanda', lo han matado más de una docena de veces.

El pasado 24 de enero, el diario brasileño 'Correio Braziliense', en la que cita documentos atribuidos a la Agencia Brasileña de Inteligencia (Abim), señala que 'Manuel Marulanda' tiene cáncer y hay una disputa por liderazgo en las Farc.

La recurrente información sobre la enfermedad de Marulanda ha inspirado columnas de opinión, e inclusive sirvió para que Arturo �lape escribiera el clásico libro 'Las Muertes de Tirofijo'.

El analista Carlos Eduardo Jaramillo, ex asesor de seguridad en el Gobierno de Gaviria, dijo que no considera descabellada la idea que el jefe guerrillero haya fallecido. Aseguró que cree que 'Tirofijo' ya está muerto y que desde el fin de la zona de distensión, en la administración de Andrés Pastrana, las Farc se reunieron para "ponerse de acuerdo de quién era la persona que debía asumir las responsabilidades del jefe guerrillero".

"Yo pienso que 'Tirofijo' hace rato está muerto y si no lo está, por lo menos está fuera del juego", indicó Jaramillo. "Nadie me lo ha dicho, pero me baso en la lógica del proceso. Hay testimonios que dicen que 'Marulanda' salió muy deteriorado de la zona de distensión, inclusive que lo sacaron sentado en una silla y cargado por guerrilleros", añadió.

El analista recordó que la enfermedad de cáncer de próstata del guerrillero no es nueva, sino que viene circulando desde hace más de cuatro años. En cuanto a su afirmación de que el jefe guerrillero ya murió, dijo que desde hace un buen tiempo no se ha vuelto a saber de él, ni se ha visto una firma, sino que el mando está a cargo del secretariado de las Farc.

"Lo último que supe de él es que hace dos años envió una carta al noveno congreso de las Farc, pero yo no he visto la firma por ninguna parte. Además, si recordamos antes todo el tema de secuestrados se debía hablar con él y ese tema lo viene asumiendo el secretariado", aseguró.

También señaló que no cree que la tensión que al parecer se vive dentro de las Farc no se debe a la posible muerte de 'Tirofijo', sino a un desarrollo del grupo guerrillero.

"La consecuencia de esto no es lo que se está tratando decir, sino que es una evolución de los grupos. Esa tensión es aparte, es un problema de la evolución que ha tenido las Farc y de su relación con el narcotráfico más las operaciones militares, es todo eso combinado", aseguró Jaramillo.

Otras muertes recientes de Pedro Marín

En 1995, una cadena radial informó que 'Manuel Marulanda' había muerto y que el fallecimiento lo había confirmado el miembro del secretariado de las Farc Iván Márquez a la misma emisora. Sin embargo, todo resultó falso.

En el 2004, la periodista Patricia Lara afirmó, sin revelar la fuente, que el guerrillero más viejo del mundo tenía cáncer de próstata y que su salud está muy deteriorada y que de ese año no pasaría.

En 1965, cuando las Farc apenas estaban en formación, un diario del Huila reportó que había sido herido de muerte.

The man is not immortal, by any means, but his death has been falsely reported before, with or without apparent reason at the time.

It could always be some trick on FARC's end, to confuse authorities and then have him show up later. Or something else..

I agree. The passing of Marulanda is certainly good news for Colombia: It's hard to say, however, how this (if true, it's still just a rumour) will change anything; the terminally ill campesino leader and revolutionary has been dying for a long time now and it may well be that he had already delegated the power to the next guy.

Let's hope, however that this event is heralding the definite weakening of the Guerrilla in Colombia and will eventually lead to negotiated peace and social reforms. (Yeah, the eternal optimist)

De quién es esta idea tan absurda?. Todo aquel que esté a favor de la paz en Colombia, detesta a los paramilitares tanto como a la guerrilla.

Pero es posible que sea mas significativa la muerte de los cabecillas de las FARC, porque son mas de 40 años con esa pesadilla encima y quizá muchos piensen que si se acaba la guerrilla, los paramilitares seguidamente. Finalmente los segundos son la consecuencia de los primeros.

Abatimientos, capturas y entregas, hacen parte de los hechos que confirman como lo han dicho los diferentes comandantes de las Fuerzas Militares, y hasta el propio Santos, que las Farc se están "resquebrajando".

Los golpes al grupo guerrillero se iniciaron en junio pasado con la confirmación de la muerte de alias ‘JJ’ y termina, hasta el momento, con la entrega de Elda Neyis Mosquera, alias ‘Karina’ la semana anterior.

‘JJ’

El 15 de junio de 2007, la Armada Nacional confirmó la muerte de Milton Sierra Gómez conocido como ‘JJ’. El guerrillero se movilizaba en una lancha cuando fue abatido en una operación conjunta de la Fuerza Pública. Sin embargo, su cuerpo no pudo ser recuperado.

Con un sólo tiro fue muerto Sierra Gómez, a quien como jefe del Frente Manuel Cepeda Vargas de las Farc, se le responsabilizó del secuestro de los doce diputados del Valle y del atentado contra el Comando de la Policía Metropolitana de las Farc, entre muchos otros delitos.

El subversivo fue muerto en combates con la Fuerza Pública en la vereda Barco, en la comprensión del corregimiento de Cajambre, jurisdicción de Buenaventura, Pacífico colombiano.

‘El Negro Acacio’

El 3 de septiembre de 2007, el Ejército anunció la muerte de Tomás Medina Caracas, conocido como el ‘Negro Acacio’. En esa oportunidad, el ministro de la Defensa Juan Manuel Santos calificó el hecho como el "más duro golpe" a este grupo guerrillero.

La operación ‘Sol Naciente’, desplegada en el Guaviare, culminó con la muerte del jefe guerrillero y 17 subversivos más que fueron abatidos cuando aviones de la Fuerza Aérea bombardearon un campamento ubicado entre San José del Guaviare y Barrancomina, en Guainía.

Las tropas militares, al llegar al campamento, sólo encontraron 14 cuerpos, el Ministro de Defensa reveló que varias fuentes dieron cuenta que el cuerpo del cabecilla del frente 16 de las Farc había sido sacado de la zona junto con el de su jefe de seguridad y el de su radio operador.

Caracas era señalado de ser el principal traficante de drogas y armas de las Farc y había sobrevivido varias veces al cerco de las autoridades. Según inteligencia del Ejército, alias ‘el Negro Acacio’ era el cabecilla más importante para el sostenimiento de la organización ilegal al ser quien controlaba el mercado de armas en el sur oriente del país y de ser amigo de ‘Fernandinho’ con quien habían entablado una alianza para intercambiar armas por droga.

‘Martín Caballero’

El 25 de octubre de 2007 las Farc aceptaron en su página de internet, la muerte del ex jefe guerrillero y comandante del frente 37 de las Farc "Martín Caballero" , y cuyo nombre real era Gustavo Rueda Díaz.

Ese día también murieron 23 de los integrantes de ese frente guerrillero que delinquía en los Montes de María, Sur de Bolívar, luego de un bombardeo y combates con las Fuerzas Militares en este sector del país.

En esa oportunidad la información fue confirmada por el ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, quien calificó la muerte de ‘Martín Caballero’, como "un profundo resultado de la estrategia de seguridad democrática" .

A pesar de que el alias de ‘Martín Caballero’ se escuchaba en la Costa Caribe, gracias al terror que allí sembró, el país lo conoció luego de establecerse que era él quien tenía a su cargo la custodia del actual canciller, Fernando Araújo, quien estuvo secuestrado por las Farc por seis años.

'Martín Sombra'

El pasado 26 de febrero fue capturado en una operación denominada "Resplandor" el guerrillero, Helí Mejía Mendoza, alias ‘Martín Sombra’, uno de los cabecillas del estado mayor de las Farc y uno de los hombres más cercanos a Manuel Marulanda Vélez, Tirofijo.

La captura se produjo en el municipio de Saboyá, Boyacá, tras diez meses de investigaciones que buscaban los pasos de este señalado subversivo.

Alias ‘Martín Sombra’ tenía una orden de captura proferida por la Fiscalía 21 Antiterrorismo, por los delitos de rebelión, concierto para delinquir y secuestro extorsivo con fines terroristas.

‘Mañe', el sucesor de 'Martín Caballero’

El viernes 29 de febrero tropas del Comando conjunto del Caribe capturaron a Manuel Ortiz o Lucio Gómez Briñez, alias ‘Mañe’, quien reemplazó a ‘Martín Caballero’ en la comandancia del frente 35 de las Farc.

Su captura se dio cuando se desplazaba de parrillero en una moto, en zona rural del municipio de Córdoba, Bolívar.

La zona de influencia en la cual actuaba Alias ‘Mañe’ se ubicaba en los Montes de María, lugar que sufrió las presiones y los ataques de los insurgentes de este frente guerrillero.

‘Raúl Reyes'

Considerado el número dos de las Farc, después de Manuel Marulanda Vélez, máximo jefe de ese grupo guerrillero, Luis Édgar Devia Silva, alias ‘Raúl Reyes’, murió a las 12:25 de la madrugada del sábado primero de marzo de 2008, producto de un bombardeo.

Una osada maniobra militar adelantada por la Fuerza Pública colombiana en territorio Ecuatoriano terminó con una de las más significativas bajas en la historia de las Farc, la misma que generó un delicado escenario político para Colombia con Ecuador, Venezuela y posteriormente con Nicaragua.

Con la muerte en combate de ‘Reyes’ la justicia colombiana archivó 121 procesos judiciales y casi un centenar de investigaciones.

Este guerrillero fue uno de los máximos cabecillas de las Farc y contra quienes pesaban múltiples órdenes de captura, 14 de ellas, en cumplimiento de igual número de condenas, las únicas que la justicia colombiana alcanzó a resolver, la mayoría en las últimas dos décadas.

‘Iván Ríos’

La mano derecha, la cédula, el pasaporte y el computador personal de Manuel Jesús Muñoz, alias ‘Iván Ríos’, comandante del Frente José María Córdoba, y coordinador del bloque noroccidental de las Farc, fueron las pruebas entregadas el 7 de marzo del presente año, por alias ‘Rojas’ a las autoridades para con ello confirmar la muerte de quien fuera considerado el cuarto en el secretariado de las Farc.

La relevancia en este caso, escabroso por los detalles que lo rodearon, fue el hecho de que el asesino de alias ‘Iván Ríos’ fue su propio jefe de seguridad, alias ‘Rojas’.

"Esta nueva baja es fruto del trabajo conjunto de las Fuerzas Militares, la Policía Nacional y el DAS; y es un ejemplo más de que el trabajo en equipo siempre da mejores resultados" , dijo en ese momento el Ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, no sin antes felicitar a los miembros de la Fuerza Pública, por lo que llamó "su valioso trabajo en beneficio de todos los colombianos" .

‘Karina’

Señalada de ser una de las mujeres más "sanguinarias" de las Farc, Nelly �vila Moreno o Elda Neyis Mosquera, su verdadero nombre, alias ‘Karina’ se entregó el pasado 18 de mayo ante tropas militares en zona rural de Argelia, Antioquia.

Las unidades tendieron un cerco muy bien planeado que no le dejó otra alternativa a la guerrillera que entregarse y desmovilizarse.

El ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos calificó este hecho como "un golpe importante" , y recordó que hace tiempo "estábamos detrás de esta mujer que le hizo tanto daño a Antioquia y al Urabá, Ella siempre estuvo siempre bajo la vigilancia del DAS" .

El funcionario dijo que este cerco la llevó a que prácticamente estuviera "muriendo de hambre" . La acción se produjo en territorio antioqueño, entre los municipios de Argelia y Sonsón, exactamente en la vereda La Soledad en jurisdicción de Sonsón.

Alias ‘Karina’ quien comandaba el frente 47, permaneció por cerca de 20 años en las filas de las Farc. Su edad está entre los 45 y 47 años, mide 1,60 metros, morena y pesa aproximadamente unos 80 kilos. Hoy se encuentra en los calabozos del DAS en Bogotá.

Otros golpes

A todos estos golpes se suman las capturas de alias ‘Simón Trinidad’, Ricardo Palmera, quien fuera preso en Ecuador el 2 de enero de 2004. Unos días después el 9 de febrero, Nayibe Rojas Cabrera, alias ‘Sonia’, fue retenida en el municipio de Cartagena del Chairá (Caquetá) . Los dos hoy están en Estados Unidos, pagando condena tras ser extraditados por el Gobierno Nacional.

Otro de los jefes de la guerrilla capturado fue el llamado ‘Canciller’ de las Farc, Rodrigo Granda, el 13 de diciembre de 2004 en Venezuela. Eso causó una crisis diplomática entre Colombia y ese país. Después de varios años en la cárcel, Granda salió por orden del Gobierno para realizar gestiones de paz.

Rumors about the aging rebel's death or serious illness have surfaced before, but had never been confirmed.

My dad is coming to visit me today, so I'm off to the airport to pick him up after the america de cali game, I'll try to get his perspective on the situation as he always has interesting things to say from his perspective. Actually funny thing, I remember they interviewed him on tv the day of the Uribe re-election movement vote to get his perspective and he was quoted as joking around as if he didn't know what was going on that day, he really messed with a lot of people that day and I still laugh about it to this day (yeah, I laugh at life a lot).

Las Fuerzas Militares de Colombia confirmaron hoy la muerte del máximo líder de las rebeldes FARC, Manuel Marulanda, "Tirofijo", y aseguraron que el liderazgo del grupo insurgente quedó en manos de Alfonso Cano.

El jefe del Estado Mayor Conjunto de las Fuerzas Militares,almirante David Moreno, leyó este sábado un comunicado oficial donde detalló que Marulanda "murió el 26 de marzo pasado a las 6:30 de la tarde.

Las causas de la muerte están aún por confirmar". Moreno añadió que al interior de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) "la versión que se maneja es que (Marulanda) murió por un paro cardiaco y que designaron como sucesor a Alfonso Cano", cuyo nombre verdadero es Guillermo Sáenz.

Reconoció que "la fuerza pública hizo diferentes operaciones y bombardeos en esa área de La Uribe, en el departamento de Metasureste, sin embargo, ninguna de esas operaciones se realizó en la fecha en la que se reporta la muerte de Marulanda".

El uniformado confirmó de esta forma la noticia que horas antes había entregado el ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, en una entrevista con la revista Semana, la cual comenzará a circular este domingo.

"Debe estar en el infierno", dijo Santos en la entrevista, y agregó que "la información que tenemos es que ya se fue (murió). Eslo que nos dice una fuente que nunca nos ha fallado".

El almirante manifestó que las FARC no han informado del hecho a todos sus integrantes y sostuvo que "esperamos que, como es costumbre, las FARC no nieguen la verdad en este caso de la muerte de‘ Tirofijo'".

"Si van a decir que la información que tenemos no es cierta, que lo demuestren", agregó el almirante colombiano. Señaló que, pese a que la muerte de Marulanda fue por causas naturales, "es el peor golpe que ha sufrido este grupo terrorista, por cuanto ‘Tirofijo' era quien mantenía cohesionada esa agrupación delictiva".

Marulanda fue el líder de las FARC prácticamente desde su creación en 1964 y se había convertido en un mito por las constantes informaciones sobre su muerte y su poder de decisión al interior de la organización.

Este sería un tercer duro golpe que sufre la estructura de la organización guerrillera tras la muerte de Raúl Reyes, durante un ataque del Ejército de Colombia el pasado 1 de marzo contra uncampamento clandestino en Ecuador.

Días después se confirmó la muerte del cuarto jefe en la jerarquía de las FARC, Iván Ríos, quien fue asesinado por su propio jefe de seguridad, interesado en cobrar la millonaria recompensa que se daba por el jefe guerrillero.

Las FARC son la organización rebelde más antigua del continente y es calificada por Estados Unidos, la Unión Europea y Colombia como una estructura terrorista.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Colombia’s defense minister revealed Saturday that officials were trying to corroborate an intelligence report claiming that Manuel Marulanda, the supreme leader of Colombia’s largest rebel group, died of natural causes in March.

If confirmed, the death of Mr. Marulanda, believed to be 76, would be a severe blow for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, a Marxist-inspired insurgency that has been waging a guerrilla war to overthrow Colombia’s government for more than four decades.

Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos told Semana, the Colombian news magazine, that an intelligence source said Mr. Marulanda died of heart failure on March 26. Mr. Santos said officials were corroborating the report, adding that three bombing raids were carried out in the area where Mr. Marulanda was thought to be around that time.

“He must be in hell,��? Mr. Santos of Mr. Marulanda.

Colombia’s government is taking a risk in divulging Mr. Marulanda’s supposed death. Indeed, the rebel leader has been reported killed numerous times since he took up arms as a teenager in an embryonic guerrilla movement in the late 1940s. Every report, including declarations in recent years that Mr. Marulanda had died of prostate cancer, was proven false.

Moreover, Colombia’s government stands to benefit from undercutting the FARC through revealing the unconfirmed intelligence, if only as a distraction from issues like a new scandal over the laptop computers of paramilitary warlords that went missing upon their extradition this month to the United States.

Other senior officials in Colombia welcomed the report of Mr. Marulanda’s death, though qualifying it as unconfirmed. “It is almost certain,��? Vice President Francisco Santos told reporters on Saturday. “The source is very reliable,��? he said.

If the report proves to be true, Mr. Marulanda’s death, on top of recent killings of other FARC leaders, would raise questions of leadership within the group. Mr. Santos said he believed Alfonso Cano, an intellectual who once led a clandestine political arm of the FARC, had replaced Mr. Marulanda.

The report is expected to reverberate throughout Colombia and Latin America. Born Pedro Antonio Marín to a peasant family in Colombia’s coffee-growing region, the guerrilla adopted the nom de guerre Manuel Marulanda Vélez in 1951 and later attained mythical status as the chief of Latin America’s most resilient insurgency.

Mr. Marulanda’s influence within the FARC was thought to be waning in recent years, but files recovered from the computers of a slain FARC commander in March revealed a firm grip by Mr. Marulanda on major strategic decisions. He signed his communiqués with the initials J. E., thought to stand for “jefe,��? or Spanish for “boss.��?

The debate is still raging over the authenticity of the recovered computer files, which referred to financial and military support for the FARC by Venezuela’s government, despite a report by Interpol this month saying that Colombian intelligence officials had not tampered with the archives.

In an interview with The New York Times in Bogotá in late March, Mr. Santos, the Colombian defense minister, said he believed Mr. Marulanda was still alive, shuttling between encampments in Guaviare, a region of thick jungle terrain in eastern Colombia.

“He does not sleep more than two or three days in the same place,��? Mr. Santos said.

Since then, Colombian security forces have made significant inroads this year against the FARC, even if the rebel group, which has about 9,000 fighters according to the United States Southern Command, is far from defeated.

In March alone, for instance, Colombian forces killed Raúl Reyes, the FARC’s second-in-command, in a bombing raid on Ecuadorean soil. Later that month, an aide-de-camp killed Iván Ríos, another member of the FARC’s seven-member secretariat, offering Mr. Ríos’s severed hand as proof.

In previous months, two other top FARC leaders were killed in battle; these deaths were believed to weaken the FARC’s cocaine-trafficking operations, a main financing activity along with abductions for ransom. Then last week, Nelly �?vila Moreno, a senior FARC commander who went by the name Karina, surrendered.

Still, the FARC remains far from fading away. The rebel group is still believed to have in its control dozens of captives it considers prisoners of war, including Ingrid Betancourt, a former presidential candidate, and three American military contractors captured in 2003.

The FARC’s strength was illustrated Friday at a battle in a mountainous area of central Colombia in which five Colombian soldiers were killed. Colombia’s Army said five guerrillas were also killed.

But it would be impossible for anyone in the organization to attain the standing of Mr. Marulanda, who first tasted war in the late 1940s, before Marxism or cocaine or support from Cuba or Venezuela became part of Colombia’s insurgencies. At that time, two groups, Conservatives and Liberals, simply killed each other’s members in Colombia’s interior.

Mr. Marulanda, with the nickname of “Sureshot,��? turned his contingent of Liberal guerrillas into the FARC in 1964, embracing Marxism and armed struggle. The FARC was thought to have more than 15,000 fighters at its height in the late 1990s; in the early years of this decade its attacks reached the heart of Bogotá.

But Mr. Marulanda told biographers he never knew city life. When photographed, he looked every bit the peasant turned guerrilla, often appearing with a small towel draped over his shoulder to dab drops of sweat in the steaming jungle. “I never went looking for war,��? he once told an interviewer. “The war came looking for me.��?

Durante muchos años las Farc se estuvieron preparando para la muerte de Manuel Marulanda 'Tirofijo'. Aun así, la sucesión del poder en el Secretariado será mucho más traumática de lo que ellos mismos esperaban.

Primero, porque con Marulanda se va en parte el mito fundacional de la guerrilla, que todavía le daba un polo a tierra con el mundo campesino y agrario. Segundo, porque hasta el momento de su muerte, y según lo revela el computador de Raúl Reyes, él seguía siendo la columna vertebral de la dirección política y estratégica de esa guerrilla. Y tercero, porque su muerte se habría producido en el peor momento que ha vivido esta organización en toda su historia.

A los problemas de comunicación, finanzas, políticos y militares, se les sumarán las tensiones propias de una competencia por el mando, pues aunque para todos esté claro que el sucesor de Marulanda es Alfonso Cano, en la práctica este no tiene ni el ascendente, ni la malicia, ni el peso histórico que hacían de 'Tirofijo' un personaje tan especial.

PUBLICIDAD
La muerte del mito fundacional, de ser confirmada, genera desconcierto. Primero, es un golpe moral para todas las generaciones de combatientes y mandos de las Farc que se formaron a la sombra de Marulanda, como imagen de terca resistencia, de indoblegable decisión de mantenerse en la guerra, del ánimo reivindicativo de los campesinos y como prueba viviente de "la traición de las elites", que representó en el mundo agrario el ataque hace 50 años a Marquetalia.

Con su desaparición también se debilita la cohesión que su sola existencia representaba. De las tres generaciones que hay en las Farc: la campesina, la de quienes se formaron en el Partido Comunista, y la de la era cocalera, la primera está desapareciendo, la segunda aún tiene incidencia, pero a medida que la organización envejece, el relevo lo hace la tercera generación, mucho más movida por los intereses y la codicia, y menos por una ideología que con los años es más anacrónica.

Por otro lado, aunque muchos en el gobierno, en los medios y en la academia pensaban que hace años 'Tirofijo' no era más que una figura simbólica en las Farc, los computadores de Raúl Reyes demuestran lo contrario.

Una de las sorpresas que se llevaron los analistas de inteligencia era ver que J.E., que era el seudónimo de Marulanda, aparecía como el más informado de todos los del Secretariado, al que todos le rendían cuentas, y quien hacía las anotaciones más pausadas y estratégicas.

En los últimos meses Marulanda dirigía en persona los pasos que se daban en la relación con Hugo Chávez, explicaba con claridad meridiana la necesidad de internacionalizar a las Farc, y expresaba con frecuencia dudas y reparos a las actuaciones emotivas o demasiado confiadas de sus camaradas. En el computador el cálculo político y la defensa del Plan Estratégico corrían siempre por cuenta de Marulanda.

Pero quizá el mayor problema es que de todas las muertes de 'Tirofijo', esta es la más inoportuna. Si efectivamente murió en marzo, como se cree, habría sido el tercer miembro del Secretariado que esa organización perdió en el mismo mes. Los otros dos murieron, el uno en un acto de guerra de su enemigo, y el otro, en un acto de traición de su guardia personal. Ambos casos demuestran debilidad y vulnerabilidad excesivas.

Con los golpes recientes las Farc están desconcertadas y tratando de reorganizar su estrategia de supervivencia y reacción. Sin Marulanda esta reorganización es más difícil porque él era una persona que permitía construir consensos y equilibrios entre las opiniones más militaristas y las más políticas dentro de las Farc.

Ahora no está claro quién puede jugar un papel de líder carismático que unifique las posiciones en el Secretariado. Alfonso Cano, así sea el sucesor elegido y tenga una gran formación, no tiene ni el carisma ni el ascendente de Marulanda. En realidad, está lejos de tenerlo. Aunque muchos de quienes le conocen lo valoran como alguien mucho más político que, por ejemplo, el 'Mono Jojoy', eso está por verse.

El hecho de que él sea el cerebro del Movimiento Bolivariano habla más mal que bien de él, pues para una organización como las Farc éste representó una involución. Mientras en el pasado las Farc operaban como el brazo armado del Partido Comunista, que al fin y al cabo estaba en la legalidad, esta suerte de partido clandestino que se inventó Cano hace lo contrario: poner a todos al servicio de la guerra y de la guerrilla.

Por otro lado Cano, que había logrado despuntar en lo militar, ha tenido tremendos reveses en poco tiempo: el asesinato por una de sus estructuras de los 11 diputados del Valle, la muerte de Iván Ríos, las deserciones de Rojas y 'Karina', y frentes como los del Tolima, Antioquia y el viejo Caldas, que han sido desarticulados completamente. En conclusión, si adentro de las Farc se espera que alguien le dé un timonazo a la conducción militar y política, para sacar adelante el plan estratégico, le va a quedar bastante difícil a Cano.

En estas circunstancias, la sucesión no será tranquila. Habrá diferencias, pugnas y, muy seguramente, si las Farc no logran en corto tiempo hacer una conferencia en serio -no por Internet-, existe el riesgo de que se empiecen a resquebrajar. Algo que en el pasado era impensable. Tan impensable como que Reyes muriera bombardeado, que a Iván Ríos lo mataran a traición y que 'Tirofijo' se muriera de viejo, finalmente. Todo ello, en menos de tres semanas.

El balance del Mindefensa fue entregado durante la condecoración

Recompensas, operativos y reinserción siguen dando resultados

Los principales golpes que han sufrido las Farc en toda su historia son resultado de la combinación de varias estrategias. La política de recompensas logró romper las redes de confianza de las Farc (caso 'Rojas'). Con 'Karina' funcionó la presión y ella dice que quiere reinsertarse. Operativos como el de 'Reyes' y 'Acacio' tocaron a los 'duros' de las Farc.

It is actually still somewhat of a mystery of what happened. According to historians, the concensous is that ole Hitler capped himself in the head with a 9mm after dispatching his new bride and even beloved dog with cyanide. Shortly after, they think that Soviet troops found the scene and burnt the lot of them. There was an old Soviet officer who even took investigators to the burn site, provided witnesses, etc. But who knows? Probably GLoid to answer my own question. jajaja

Marulanda led the Farc from its formation until his death
The legendary leader and founder of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) is dead.

Can the Colombian rebels, who have never been without the leadership of "Manuel Marulanda" and are under attack from all sides by the US-backed military, survive?

Allegations by military intelligence were confirmed by the Farc in a televised address: Pedro Marin, the real name of "Manuel Marulanda" died of a heart attack on 26 March, lying in the arms of his lover and surrounded by his bodyguards.

So ends a Colombian legend, that of the man who built the Farc from a handful of cousins and friends in 1964 into one of the world's most powerful and richest insurgent groups.

"The Farc are irreversibly weakened and in decline," said Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos.

"We are winning, but we cannot claim victory yet."

Desertions

March was a disastrous month for the Farc and their ruling body the Secretariat, as three of the seven members died or were killed.

Before Marulanda died he will have known that his right hand man, alias Raul Reyes was killed on 1 March when the Colombian military bombed a Farc camp two kilometres inside Ecuadorean territory.

A week later "Ivan Rios", the youngest member of the Secretariat, was murdered by one of his bodyguards, who chopped off the commander's hand to claim a reward of more than $1m, which was duly paid by the government.

Marulanda was a hard-line communist of the old agrarian school... we may now see a more pragmatic and modern approach from the Secretariat

Paying for information, which has become one of the pillars of the government's fight against the Farc, has led to a wealth of intelligence, to which army officials attribute some of the most successful operations against the rebels, including the killing of Raul Reyes in Ecuador.

During a press conference given by Mr Santos, radio intercepts were played that confirmed other military intelligence reports, that the man with the alias Alfonso Cano (real name Guillermo Leon Saenz), is the new commander-in-chief of the rebel army.

There are doubts that Cano, the group's top ideologue, will be able to replace Marulanda effectively.

"Marulanda was a mythic founder who gave cohesion to the rebels," said Alejo Vargas, a university professor and conflict analyst.

Analysts and army intelligence believe that the death of Marulanda could trigger a wave of desertions, further weakening the Farc and providing a treasure trove of information with which the military can hammer away at commanders and units that remain in the field.

"Karina" handed herself in to the Colombian authorities

Even before Marulanda's death, desertion had become the Achilles Heel of the guerrillas.

More than 220 rebels deserted in the first quarter of this year alone.

Thanks to generous subsidies for those who surrender and judicial breaks for those convicted of crimes, many rebels, especially those from units under pressure from the army, have turned themselves in.

An unexpected coup came in the form of a woman with the alias "Karina", who deserted on 19 May.

She was an iconic figure in the Farc, one of the top women commanders and seen in the movement as something of a female Rambo.

Half-starved and on the run from the military for months, the head of the 47th Front surrendered saying that the military struggle for power was over.

'Divisions'

During failed peace negotiations from 1999 to 2002 with the previous government of Andres Pastrana, there was evidence that elements within the Farc were serious about looking for a peaceful solution, but that Marulanda's authority was beyond question.

Some analysts see the prospects for peace improving with the passing of the founding leader and the ascension of Cano.

"Marulanda was a hard-line communist of the old agrarian school," said General Manuel Jose Bonnett, a former head of the armed forces.

There have long been rumours of divisions within the Farc between the political wing, represented by Cano, and the military wing, led by Mono Jojoy, who commands the most powerful of the guerrilla divisions, the Eastern Bloc, which has some 4,000 fighters.

"For many field commanders of the Farc, the natural leader would be Mono Jojoy," said an intelligence source.

"He was once the bodyguard of Marulanda, a man who understands guerrilla warfare and who planned many of the biggest successes the Farc have had."

As well as much of the military power, Jojoy also has some of the biggest coca-growing areas under his influence.

It is from these that cocaine is produced and where the Farc gets the lion's share of its money.

Should Jojoy make a bid for the leadership, the Farc could split.

However, the approval of Alfonso Cano would have come from the Secretariat, of which Mono Jojoy is also a member - meaning a joint decision would have been reached.

Nobody believes the Farc is going to unravel, as happened with Peru's Shining Path after the capture of its leader Abimael Guzman in 1992.

The Farc is structured to withstand the loss of key leaders and enough men of high profile and charisma survive to ensure that there is continuity.

The fact that the Farc still receives hundreds of millions of dollars from drugs, kidnapping and extortion, ensures that it will still be able to recruit and equip new levies.

On 26 May, the Farc will mark its 44th anniversary, but there will not be much to celebrate.

Uhhh I see a few posters here that are comparing this to Hitler. Don;t know if that is the "best" comparision. Although one comparison....he really had no one desinated to cover his back? (is this true? kitty does not know these types of details) So there might be some fanatics out there that will do the same as people did status post Hilter - but open to interpretation. Plus, there were Soooo many that lived in exile and at large before Hilter said his goodbyes. Is that the case here too? Any poster that can do an excellent job (as you always do) of summing it up for kitty, much appreciated ;))

Interesting comparison. For total murders, maiming by bombs or mines, and displacements, the FARC is probably in the lead by a long shot. But they couldn't thrive without the damage done to the country by Escobar & Co.
