Colombia's president can set a democratic example by saying no.

"A modern, democratic president with a 64% approval rating at the end of his second term has reason to be proud and wonder if he could win again. It's at precisely such a moment, however, when he should also remember that a properly functioning democracy never depends upon one man and requires the peaceful transfer of power."

Constitutions exist to limit popular democracy. 51% of the people wanting something is not a good enough reason.

wtf are you talking about? we are discussing democracy in Colombia

medefockinllin says on Nov 20, 2009, 17:59:

I think that makopp5 has been damaged by the toxins from his printing business.

Colombia's constitution allowed for only one term to avoid dictatorship and corruption. Uribe changed it so that he could have a second term. Now he wants three terms. There cannot be one rule for him and one rule for other presidents thereafter.

Question for current Uribe-lovers? Would you be happy with the prospect of someone else coming in for three terms after Uribe is fired by the Santos family?

makopp5 says on Nov 20, 2009, 19:25:

Who cares the constitution, the mayority can change it, and in elections the people can decide what they want.
btw the inks are packed in vaccum tins.

medefockinllin says on Nov 20, 2009, 19:54:

Makkop5 - your last comment is extremely ignorant. For someone who has lived in Colombia for so long, I find this lack of knowledge shocking.

The original constitution was set in 1886 and updated in 1991. Any changes to the constitution must go through strict procedures and ratified by the Constitutional Court. The last constitutional reform was in 2005 allowing for the re-election of El Narcotraficante No. 82. This change was impelled by Uribe and not by the people of Colombia.

Glad to hear that the inks are vacuum packed. Maybe you just ate too much British beef in the 1980s.

so if uribe in guilty, why the Constitutional Court (and they don`t like him at all, they would be very happy) is not investigating? They would like, but there is nothing. Democracy is where the mayority rules. If you think its ignorant or doesn`t matter. When the mayority wants to reelect uribe , so go on.

medefockinllin says on Nov 21, 2009, 06:01:

Makkop5 - if Uribe was being tried for a crime it would be through a criminal court. Your lack of intelligence is astounding.

Do you know what the word "constitution" means? You obviously have no understanding of basic law or republican constitution. Even more embarrassing for you is that you come from a federal republic.

You have no idea about what the word democracy means (power to the people). Democracy is where individuals are equal in the eyes of the law and have equal access to power. It is not about majority rule. Have you ever heard about phrase "tyranny of the majority"? This is what El Norteno is referring to.

makopp5 says on Nov 21, 2009, 09:07:

you said it power to the people, and if they want the same president and they ware signing to change the constitution, it`s POWER TO THE PEOPLE. And when they will elect Uribe again with a mayority, so it`s POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

romy says on Nov 21, 2009, 09:38:

Romy - makopp5 has an IQ of about 80. He answers questions with other questions and then cannot understand the answers. He copies and pastes in Spanish and is substantially illiterate.

Makopp5 - you still don't understand what "tyranny of the majority" means do you? Do you know that the majority of Cubans vote for the Communist party? The majority of Palestinians vote for Hamas. The majority of Israelis vote for right wing zionists. The majority of Germans voted for the Nazi's in 1933....oh sorry, you probably don't know your own history.

"tyranny of the majority" - perfect example is Ireland with the EU constitution. Makkop5 - you have demonstrated yourself as having no knowledge on politics, history, or international affairs. Stick to printing....or copying and pasting.

medefockinllin says on Nov 21, 2009, 14:31:

RAAY, I was trying to be kind. An IQ of 80 would place him in the bottom 30% of adults, which is probably a little generous. I would say an IQ of 60-70 would be appropriate.

Awaiting for a response from him on this which will inevitably include some comment about the growth of his printing business!

el norteño says on Nov 21, 2009, 15:15:

Makopp,

Uribe has the power of incumbency. As the office-holder, he has advantages over challengers in an election.
I agreed with the amendment allowing for a second term, but 8 years is sufficient for any individual. After that it deteriorates to the situation you see in Venezuela and other countries. It will weaken Colombian democratic institutions.

El Expatriado says on Nov 22, 2009, 03:06:

With all due respect Romy and Mede, why I do agree that a third term in office for anyone would be pushing it, and I think Uribe should call it quits,I have talked to well over 200 people travelling throughout Colombia, all estrados, all professions, all levels of education, and I can honestly say, that your opinions are in a very small minority.

My in-laws ad friends are concerned, because thay don't know who can step in to take Uribe's place.

I also think it is a bit petty to belittle Makopp about his level of English, even if you disagree with his political viewpoints.(I actually beleive he is a bit too simplistic and opinionated at times myself).

makopp5 (☼Travelguide writer),
Get out a dictionary or Wiki democracy and republic. There is a vast difference and democracy is mob rule while a republic is the rule of law. For exaple if 90% of the people on this site wanted you off, under a democracy, you would be gone. If we were in the Republic of Peter, you would have to violate laws and become a pain in the ass to all of the mods and then they could remove you from the island. Colombia is a Republic.
