Colombian soccer players found dead in Venezuela

http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-43423820091025

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela said on Sunday at least 10 members of an amateur Colombian soccer team had been found dead after being kidnapped on its side of the border.
Venezuelan Vice President Ramon Carrizalez told reporters the men were found with bullet wounds in various parts of the western state of Tachira, on the border between the two South American neighbors.

One of the 12 men survived the ordeal, while another was still missing, Venezuelan authorities said.

Kidnappings and armed disputes are rife on both sides of the frontier, where Colombian guerrilla groups, paramilitary militia and criminal gangs all operate.

Carrizalez said the deaths of the football players, whom local media have said were local tradesmen seized on Oct. 11 while in Venezuela for a game, were related to Colombia's internal conflict. He gave no further details.

The incident adds another complication to fractious ties between the two countries. Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez broke off relations and minimized trade earlier this year due to Colombia's acceptance of U.S. military bases on its soil.

Hey ex Pat, ....Huh????????????????????? I usually discount everything I am told by someone who starts out telling me he is being "honest". In your case, it is not important......you aren't even cogent. I suppose you think the US is responsible for the attacks on the WTC and the pentagon on 9/11 and the atttack on the USS Kohl, or maybe the bombing of the US embassies in Africa.
How about the extermination of 100 million plus folks by Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot and the other socialists since the dawn of the 20th century? Oh by the way, Hitler was a SOCIALIST... it was National Socialism and not National Capitalism that he founded. He was influenced by Marx and not Edmund Burke or Adam Smith.

Greg, What is wrong with making our own decisions? Are we so helpless and stupid that the government must control everything we do? If the government was not preventing domestic drilling and refining the US would have plenty of energy. The problem is the ENVIRO-NAZIS. Global warming is a HOAX.
The CAFE standards were not cancelled (but they should be cancelled) and along with the UNIONS they have bankrupted the US auto industry. You guys need to take a break from the State-Run media and find the truth.

JB, the anti-socialism card wont work. I live in sweden, which is a socialist country. All 4 countries in scandinavia, norway, finland, sweden and denmark are socialist countries. All 4 countries top the ranking of almost every index. Far better then capitalist united states. The only index america will beat us in, is probably the debt index per capita.

Im not saying that socialism is perfect, its not. But its better then capitalism. There has to be a balance between communism and capitalism and its called socialism. :)

I agree with this statement. I have heard really good things about Sweden and Denmark based on their socialist ideas. BUT... Hugo Chávez is far from being a socialist leader, he's a dictator with communist thoughts and points of view which he so desperately tries to hide under his "socialist" shroud. We can all see right through it though and that's one of the reasons which makes him so laughable.

Venezuela ups border security after 10 slayings
By IAN JAMES (AP) – 20 hours ago

CARACAS, Venezuela — Ten men who belonged to the same soccer team were slain execution-style nearly two weeks after being abducted in a crime that Venezuela said Sunday could be the work of warring factions in neighboring Colombia.

Venezuelan troops stepped up security patrols in the area near the Colombian border after the bodies of 10 men, most of them Colombians, were found in multiple spots in western Tachira state Saturday, Vice President Ramon Carrizalez said.

The victims were among a group of 12 men who authorities say were kidnapped Oct. 11 from a field where they were playing soccer

Prosecutors said the kidnappers, described as armed men dressed in black, were thought to have called out the names of the team's members one by one before taking them away in vehicles.

The killings occurred near a porous border where Colombian rebels, paramilitary fighters and drug smugglers are often able to move about with ease. Venezuelan officials also have struggled in recent years with frequent kidnappings and murders blamed on common criminals in various parts of the country. The motive behind the latest slayings remains unclear.

The single known survivor, 19-year-old Manuel Cortez of Colombia, was shot in the neck, said Orlando Lopez, one of his brothers.

Lopez told The Associated Press that his brother didn't know his abductors. "They had them tied up for 14 days in the sun," Lopez said. "They tied them up to some trees, with chains on their necks and with their hands locked up."

Lopez said his brother recalled the men saying the hostages "didn't have anything to do with it but that they were going to kill them because they had seen their faces."

As for Cortez, "they put him on his knees and they shot him," Lopez said by phone from the military hospital in Caracas where his brother was moved after being afraid for his safety at a hospital in San Cristobal in the border region. A stranger arrived at the first hospital asking to see Cortez and was detained by authorities, Lopez said.

Columbia Law Survey Finds Confusion Over Founding Fathers vs. Karl Marx

New York, May 29, 2002. Almost two-thirds of Americans think Karl Marx's maxim, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" was or could have been written by the framers and included in the Constitution, according to a nationwide survey commissioned by Columbia Law School.
