Colombian police kill rebel leader

Colombian police kill rebel leader
13:42, October 26, 2009

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said on Sunday that police had killed Hermes Triana, one of the top leaders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the largest rebel group in the country.

National Police launched an operation in Puerto Rico, a rural town in the southwestern province of Caqueta, where Triana, known as Pata Mala (Bad Paw), had been hiding, Uribe said.

Triana was the leader of the FARC's Teofilo Forero (TF) mobile column that carried out the 2003 El Nogal Club bombing in northern Bogota, one of the worst attacks in the city that killed 36 and injured 200.

The FARC guerrillas managed to park a car containing 200 kg of explosives in the club's garage and detonated the car bomb. There were approximately 600 people in the building at the time of the explosion.

The TF headquartered in Caqueta then killed councilors in the town of Rivera and a local deputy Jaime Lozada in 2005.

Director of the Colombian police, General Oscar Naranjo said an informant facilitated the raid on Triana. Two members of the police troops were injured in the operation.

thats about all that Uribe has been good at. Colombia looks to be improving on the surface, but inside its a different story. What about the help for the desplazados? Or how about an effort to improve on human rights? They have been pretty much nonexistent. He has been great against the FARC, which is a big job in itself...but has failed on other important aspects of Colombian society.

Shoot all FARC members on sight, and then read them their rights while the vultures are picking at their bones.

No, I believe my positon is in accordance with international law.

The FARC claims that they are fighting a war of revolution. (They say this to avoid murder charges for all of their crimes if and when they are captured.) You can't have it both ways. If you are a combatant in a war of revolution, you are liable to be shot by the enemy. Any time, any where. You can't claim "prisoner of war" status after you are captured, but claim that the authorities are obliged to "arrest you" like a normal criminal.

A combatant in a war of revolution can be shot by their enemy any time, any where." Did the USA or the USSR "arrest" the Nazis during world war 2? No, they killed them whenever and where ever they could. Colombia should do the same to the FARC.

Gee, are you saying that the FARC has the right conduct war against the Colombian state, and to bomb innocent civilians, but the police have to arrest them? Guess again.

BUSHWICK-BILL says on Oct 27, 2009, 06:35:

You are wrong Phillyguy.. They have to make them prisoners but they can not shoot them... This is against the convention of Geneva and against all human rights...

From the explanation of Article 3 of the convention. In other words, the government is within its rights to kill them and let them rot in the street to be fed upon by vultures.

phillyguy says on Oct 27, 2009, 06:49:

What a load of crap. There is no requirement that they "have to make them prisoners" unless they are actively trying to surrender, and there is no evidence of that in this case. If a soldier breaks down a door in urban combat, the order of the day is to shoot first and ask questions later. You don't announce yourself, you don't ask them if they want to surrender, you break down the door and fire.

Of course, you deem the following not worth mentioning"

"Triana was the leader of the FARC's Teofilo Forero (TF) mobile column that carried out the 2003 El Nogal Club bombing in northern Bogota, one of the worst attacks in the city that killed 36 and injured 200. The FARC guerrillas managed to park a car containing 200 kg of explosives in the club's garage and detonated the car bomb. There were approximately 600 people in the building at the time of the explosion."

If I'm not mistaken, the Geneva Convention does not allow the use of massive car bombs to massacre innocent civilians either. Nor does it allow the kidnapping and ransom of non-combatants. The FARC, and their cowardly supporters like you, want it both ways. The FARC isn't obligated to play by the rules, but the govenment is. Bullcrap. It's time to resurect "los pepes".

I think like phillyguy...... But maybe we gringos are wrong and just need to hold hands with the murderous torture giving bombing kidnapping terrorists and gather around the campfire and sing happy songs,,, then they would change thier evil ways for sure!!! But then again I am just one of those darn uncivilized americans that ate breakfast at mcdonalds this morning and supports our troops in afganistan. Isnt it a shame there are so many of us that will stand and fight for the rights of the good folks instead of the terrorists,,, what a bummer!!! Almost time to return to mcdonalds for lunch... KF

I travel a lot of times through Colombia.... I also travel to places like Guaviare and Putumayo. A lot of times I got stopped by the FARC. They asked for my passport and I told them that I think they are horrible terrorists who damage Colombia. They always listen to me and we started a discussion. Finally some of them believed me and they put their guns to the ground and left the guerilla after I talked to them. Believe me, at least 50 guerilleros left the FARC because of my arguments. And because I always talk to them when they stop me in the jungle. With words you can reach more then with guns. I also have got a price from the Colombia government as honor for the good things I have done in Colombia...
