Colombia and Chile

Soon I will visit Chile, a country that also loves cumbia music.
I was there several years ago but back then I did not know much about their musical interest.

I will report back as soon as I have a pretty nice documentary.

By the way, I did not post it there, got to be some human being with a gringo-mind who does not much about the relationship between the two countries.

Azuno, I had ham and cheese today, it has the edge over the cheese and ham due mainly to the juxtaposition of its two main ingredients, which are the same in both cases.

Monpirri, I was just thinking this afternoon how thoroughly sophisticated the music seems to be in Chile, they listen to a lot of very stylish Brazilian music, un toque de tribalistas, djavan, caetano veloso. Haven't heard any cumbia here, I don't think their sound systems are shitty enough to faithfully reproduce it.

There is also a lot of that weird US soft rock music that I am sure studios only made to export to markets like this.

Friday is Chilean independence day and the shop assistants and waitresses are all dressed in chilean national dress, they look smokin'

Kurious here's another cumbia, chilean style.
I bet you one day you will know the difference between the two.

You are correct!
Now you need to spend sometime listen to cumbias from Colombia for a better understanding. But you have a great musical ear!!!!

johnny2009 says on Sep 14, 2009, 20:34:

I think the wildlife is funkier in Chile too, I know Colombia technically has greater biodiversity, but here they got penguins, flamencos, sea lions hanging out in the town centre, monkey puzzle trees everywhere, giant sea birds, bottle brush plants, giant bumble bees that don't look where they are going and whack you in the side of the head, you look at them and think WTF? you shouldn't even be able to fly, patagonian foxes, the pudu pudu too, the world's smallest deer about the size of a spaniel. Austral kestrels feckin everywhere.

I also think Chileans have nicer faces than Colombians, I mean they are not completely blank and expressionless. They have knives forks and real plates too, you don't shit through a sieve just because some dirty Colombian bastard cook didn't remember to wash his hands after ass fisting his first cousin.

I´ve got to admit i prefer Colombian cumbia to the Chilean variety. Johnny is right about the wildlife, you can see a lot more in Chile considering it has so many climates although I can´t say that Antioquia isn´t beautiful. If you wanna try a good Chilean dish, get yourself to the coast and order a "Paila Marina". As for the birds i find you get some nice Chilenas but overall the Colombianas win. My polola was a looker but was half german so that doesn´t count. I remember las December when we had over 20 temblores in 2 days, now that was fun when giving classes on the 15th floor. 18 is great, i love the Chilean Chicha they sell for about 2 weeks around the date... Just couldn´t work out why they deprived me of it for the rest of the year in such a capitalist country!

Johnny,

That ass-fisting business seems to be a problem with kitchen hygiene all over the country.

And you are right, this newer generation of 30 years old and down of Colombian women all tend to have the deer in the headlights look.

My dad has a lady friend, whose daugther is probably the hottest woman I have seen in the last ten years. Body, face, hair, skin, she is perfect.

But there is nothing behind those eyes.

Still no temblor, but saying that, I slept through the last one I was here for so who knows? Tap beer was off tonight waiting for a delivery, I had 3 bottles of Kunstmann Torobayo. Everywhere in Chile is by the coast relatively speaking, I am about 20 mins away from Niebla but have not been. No tsumanis today (maremotos) but there have been some pretty hairy waves bashing the shore somewhere near Talca

Azuno, if you have quit smoking then stay in Colombia, we don't want you down here in our Chilean bars polluting our beautiful smoky air with your smug ex-smoker self righteous monologues and overly pronounced attention seeking coughs and splutters.

Monpirri, I saw some Cumbia on the TV last night, it was during a guest slot on Chile País de Talento.

Anyway back to the matter in hand, Tommy Rey was on Mega Noticias Reportaje del Fin de Semana this afternoon. He is apparently going down a storm in Santi this weekend.

I notice that Chilean accordions are chromatic rather than diatonic, that might go some way to explain the difference in cumbia styles
