Cali, avenida sexta

After an interesting journey through Central America (and more), I finally get closer to Colombia! I will fly Panama City ( - Pereira - Bogota) - Cali on Friday (about 220 USD). Will arrive at seven at night, and will be staying in Santa Monica. Guess I will check out avenida sexta Friday night, since it's close to where I'm staying. One question though (for now); is avenida sexta a gringofied and half-seedy nightlife spot, or are there mostly good (not seedy) and popular local places? Would like to meet some locals (I dance like a drunken monkey though, so salsa is out of the question.) I don't have any specific plans for Cali yet, and will just see what happens and how I like the citu and it's people.

Avenida Sexta is a bit past its prime. It used to be ground zero for nightlife, but not anymore.

Avenida Novena (9) around cll 15 is the new zona rosa for restaurants and bars. The south side of Cali is a lot nicer than what you'll find around Sexta. Also check out San Antonio.

Sexta is over,,, full of prostitutes, she males and very seedy.. hardly any gringos though... You like to dance the drunken monkey whatever that is? Go over to gringo pits Blue Brothers or London Bar.. There you can can dance the drunken monkey with all of the other gringos.

The sexta is great, alive at night, but salsa rules here. You might think it a bit too much if you haven't seen such a place before. There may be some gringos. A few years ago I thought I was the only one, but last summer I noticed others walking around. Cali still, however, isn't exactly at the top of gringo's list of destinations ( thank God).

A short distance away is barrio Granada, which is an upscale area. More bars and restaurants, a safe, walkable area.

Now I LOVE Cali. There are lots here who pan it. But I know great people there, and much of my fun involves hanging out with my friends. I'm not sure I what I would do, however, if I didn't know anyone. Do you speak Spanish? You'll need to. The locals are very friendly, but be careful. They will get you drunk in a heartbeat and your wallet will disappear, or worse. Nothing would amuse them more than to rip off a gringo.

I don't know what Santa Monica is, is that a hotel? If it's on the sexta, you better try to get a room away from the street and/or upper level because there will be lots of noise. I stay a few blocks over, and still, it seems like those brass instruments never stop and these people never sleep.

You might try to find where an electronica club is, if salsa isn't your thing. But in Colombia, you really need to learn a little about Salsa or Meringue. I'm a horrible dancer, but you'll feel like you're really missing out if you don't at least try. And, it's a great way to meet people and interact. It's hard enough to talk in the club, dancing is about all you can do. And if you sit out, they think something is wrong with you.

Be careful, there's places you shouldn't venture alone. Yes, I know, that's true in any place.

Have a great time!

**ok.. I have to defer to the peeps that live there. I would say you wanna walk the sexta and check it out, but it may not be the place you actually spend a lot of time.

Avenida Sexta is a dump....forget Blues Brothers also unless you have date because it is pretty dead lately.

Move over a couple of blocks to Granada...much...much nicer. They have a couple of new bars around Calle 17 and novena.

One is called New Orleans and the other one across from it has a British Flag and it is nice also...both have live music.

It seems like there are new upscale Bars/Resturants popping up all around Granada these days

There is also Adventura Plaza across the street from Jardin Plaza Mall in Ciudad Jardin.
Aventura Plaza is full of bars and attracts more college students.

Parque del Perro in San Fernando has quite a few bars/resturants too.

Both of these places are more upscale and attract a different crowd than Ave. Sexta

Yeah, I don't know anybody that would set foot on la sexta, lots of lowlifes there, although further north, from C26 on up, it has a better clientele. Parque del Perro is fun and nice, like Art mentions, and Granada is as well.

La sexta is definetly seedy, and Ave. 9 in Granada (from Clle 7 to 19) is a much better option. Loads of restaurants offering anything from nuvo criollo cuisine to Japanese, Italian, Brazilian and other stalwart favourites.

The southern part of the city is the upscale part of town.

In regard to Cali Plaza, a friend stayed there and found it really noisy. The Viejo Barril went on all night (this could have changed with the relatively new "Hora Zanahoria") and what he assumed to be pre-pagos were shrilly shouting at each other in the hallway of the hotel. It is my understanding that the hotel is up for sale.

Oh and there is a little pocket of clubs on the Menga strip (north). Jala Jala, Praga and one or two electronica clubs.

Actually except for Ciudad Jardin and Pance, which are really suburbs, The Westside is the really upscale section of town.

http://www.caliplaza.com/html/cali_plaza_hotel_rates.html

Website says $60 a night with all taxes included.

If it is really chica friendly they probably won't charge $$$ for each chic you take up to your room....might turn out to be one hell of a bargain for the guy that bangs 3 chics a day. hehehe !!!

Tienda Vieja is great on thursday as well - if you know your salsa.
You also have av. 6b, that have some places, but on the whole, av.6 is kind of dead.
(much people on weekends, but not the best of crowds)

As many have written, Granada is much nicer.

If it's right, It's smooth and nice.

I went to this place in the boonies , looked like a garage, if some one tells me the name I'll remember it. Had Latin go-go girls and fire fighter washboard ab guys dancing on pedestals, but also had dwarfs (male and female) dancing on pedestals, and a fat women in a kinky maids outfit with her barriga hanging out on a pedestal too. Later she was doing "El Perrito" with one of the fire fighter guys.

There was also another night club near there a new one, which had twice as many people, about 2000 packed in, with a big variety of music and crazy light show.

THese were supposedly the best places in Cali. I have photos. Could download em if I knew how.

Anyway, these places would be interesting (though very intimidating, even if you speak Spanish). If only I could remember name and barrio.
