Broadband speeds

when I left in feb - they were touching 3MB.

Has that increased any?

You'll have to be more specific. I know people in Bogota with fiber connections to their apartment buildings that get above 10Mb.

Hi Shorty.
I am not sure what speed our ISP provides/claims to provide to us but at times it appears to be very good and at other times frustratingly useless! Worst hours seem to be during the week, just before 8 am, then lunchtime and finally between 5 and 6 pm. This is probably when everybody with a computer at work uses the internet most; not for work but playing during company time with a company facility. In my ex place of work, written warning material. Horrible am I not?

Telmex offers up to 8MB download, I hve 2 MB download and it has worked perfectly for the past month. I use skype to call phones in the US, remote desktop to computers in the US as well and monitor call centers from Bogota located in the US and it seems to be enough for now.

About the same as when you left in February. But mobile broadband plans are getting to be good value now (a USB modem that works with Comcel, Movistar or whatever cell provider you sign up to).

On the same subject but diverging slightly (not wanting to hijack the thread) does any of you knowledgable and intelligent people have a MOBILE broadband carrier that you would recommend......or are they all the same. I suppose they all have different 'packages' that make it hard to compare. I am moving back to the farm soon (near Pacho) and there is no phone cable to the farm and it would be expensive to install a brand new cable from town so I am looking at the usb modem options. I can't do without my computer. Thanks for the piggy-back Shorty.

If you are in the sticks, your best bet for mobile service of any kind is probably Comcel. However, it depends on your specific area.

Intra-Colombia connections are fast, but if they sell you a link faster than 5Mbps it probably won't get speeds that fast to the US or Europe... at least in Bogotá.

Durito2 is not happy (yet) with movistar and Brian848 speeds don't look real flash. I have a comcel sim card for my nokia phone that worked great at the farm, so maybe I will try the comcel broadband.....assuming they have one?

Well, UNE WiMax is having another bust. I have been getting 250k download but paying for 2Mbps for two days now. Calling them tomorrow if it doesn't clear up.

When I was there earlier this year - all the mobile companies required too much ID...which I couldn't really provide.

I was with Une and when they sais 2MB....I actually got 2MB...then they increased it to 3MB. This was in Medellin. One thing I did notice though, when I was streaming football matches.....it kind of sucked....too much buffering going on.

I just upgraded to 20MB here in the UK...damn...its quick and actually is 20MB too.

They did work better without the added distraction of internet access Shorty. In my latter professional days in the UK, my staff were told to ask permission to use the computer for personal things during their breaks. Violation of that privilege resulted in long bans and continued violation resulted in official warnings. Seems drastic but if adults behave like children, then you need to treat them in the same way. Especially when you are paying them for their games and afterwards they expect to be paid overtime because the working day was not long enough to accomplish their objectives.

Ok, I had many internet providers here in Colombia and currently I am on Telmex. I get (according to speedtest.net) 8.09 megabits (down) from the US (Miami) and 0.48 megabits (up) to Miami. I am in Santa Marta and 4 hops to the NAP in MIami.
