Excavator,

I got my first shotgun when I was 7 years old, rifle when I was 10 and pistol when I was 15. I have never shot anyone nor do I know of any other gun owner who has shot anyone. Every one I know in the US has at least one gun. I have one here in Colombia. They have guns on military bases in the US. The people have guns to protect themselves from the government in the US. "Guns are the teeth of the constitution." George Washington "When there is a government that fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyrany." Thomas Jefferson. That is why we have the 2nd Amendment. People kill people. They do not need a gun to do this. There are no murders in your Great Britain? I know there is great fear of your government. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKdBxpKqUvs

Isn't Ginny Simone an NRA employee? This kind of spurious 'journalism' lacks credibility regardless of your view on gun ownership, which is why it doesn't make it past youtube.

As many on PBH are no doubt aware, depicting other states as oppressors of freedom and basic human rights is typically used as a tool to control ones own population and frequently doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

I believe it is not easy for the average resident to own a gun in Colombia. Apparently criminals have no trouble. Therefor every honest person is ipso facto safer.

oneforyourmillion says on Nov 7, 2009, 06:46:

It is very easy to buy an illegal gun in Colombia and cheap. A revolver off the street runs you about $50 to $75. New in the box will cost you about $200 dollars or so easy as pie. So much for gun control.

Like I say, there's a reason Florida is called the Gunshine State,,,everyday you see the results here in Miami of cheapo street guns.

niolasarboleda,
The video was not journalism. It showed the march actually happened and how many Brits feel about their loss of rights. As most people are aware, the people of England have been so apathetic for so long that they have forgotten to teach their own history in their schools. When guns were legal, the bobbies did not carry guns because they did not have the need. Since they have become illegal, criminals have easy access to guns and need not worry about whom they attack. I only used England as an example. There are many countries that have done the same with the same results. Two generations ago, no one would have believed that the British people would willing give up their right to defend themselves and their property which was written into the Magna Carta almost 1000 years ago. Benjamin Frankin said that anyone who gives up any freedom for security deserves niether. It is very difficult to get a legal gun in Colombia and I seriously doubt a legal gun owner has ever used one in a criminal act. A $150 pistol in the US costs over $2000 here and it is a long process to get one. I travel long distances with money and/or other people's money and need one in my work. It is that or hire a body guard for a day or two. In the long run it is cheaper to own a gun and I know how to use it probably better than most body guards. I am a target and have been robbed twice but not since I started carrying a pistol and stopped using cell phones. It is still legal in Colombia to defend yourself and your property. When it becomes illegal, I will move elsewhere.

Thanks J. I agree, the video was not journalism, however with the exception of Clint Eastwood toting a six shooter, the video portrayed itself as journalism (someone holding a microphone with a prison as a backdrop saying "I was the first reporter to...', for example). It had the look and feel of journalism. I wasn't aware that the British no longer have the right to defend themselves and their property (please don't tell makopp - Germany would have a field day with this kind of information), nor that the Magna Carta gave them that right (they forgot to teach me that in school :)). If ever I decide to take up a life of piracy, Britain will be high on my list of ports of call. I am fairly sure that the Magna Carta didn't cover gun ownership, that gun control predates the rise in gun crime in the UK, and that the increase in gun crime is not connected to new restrictions on gun ownership. Also, it looked like the march was protesting a ban on hunting, not gun ownership. I don't have an issue with gun ownership, just proselytizing it (which the video understandably did). I guess that makes my comment off topic looking back at the original post.

Out of curiosity, what is the process to get a legal gun in Colombia and once you get approval, why can't you just import the gun you want and pay taxes on it?

Juepaje says on Nov 8, 2009, 07:42:

My lawyer got all of the forms that I needed and I had to get a psychiatric exam, physical, a certification letter from DAS that I was not wanted for anything. Then you have to write a letter to the Lt. Colonel at your local army base stating the reasons why you want or need a gun. Then you have to go and meet with him and answer a bunch of questions from him. If he signs off on your letter, he will then pass it on to another official which can take weeks and they will put the official stamp on the letter. During this process you will have deposited 200K COP for the documentation process. Once all of this is done you can go and get your gun.

They do not have a great selection. You buy what you think best but you do not actually own the gun. The gun is owned by the Republica de Colombia. You can not sell the gun but you can transfer the right to carry it to your wife, son, or daughter but not a cousin or in-law. You can legally buy 100 rounds, which is two boxes for a 9mm, every six months. You can also get bullets on the black market and cheaper but the army sells only one brand. If you get caught with a different brand of bullet in your gun, you will go to jail and not pass go. They will also take their gun away from you and you won't ever be able to get one again.

I am well aware that guns did not exist when the Magna Carta was written. The Carta did allow you to defend yourself and your property. In England, that is not legal now. You have to have the state do this for you just as you have to have the state care for your health and you in your old age.

I, personally, prefer to care for myself and don't want or need any help from the state to do this. I have two beautiful daughters who are both NRA certified sharp shooters. They were taught to hunt, trap and fish by me just as I was taught by my father and he by his father and so on for hundreds of years. Hunting and self defense are important skills especially for women. We still have the muskets and rifles from The Revolution and the War for Southern Independence of my fore'-fathers. My youngest hunts with the same 30.06 Sprinfield rifle that my grandfather used to kill Germans with during the 1st world war. It has been the hunting gun in my family ever since.

This is just my opinion. We can agree to disagree on anything and still find common ground. I am not a hater but have a different opinion because of where I was born and how I was raised. I know most people don't like guns and think by outlawing them that their world is safer. I simply and respectfully disagree. Peace.

in good part, i agree, excavator. i grew up with guns, hunting, etc, then did the military thing--more guns, bigger and more dangerous--then after that nightmare military thing, came home and tried to reassemble a regular life. then many many years later, i rounded up all my guns--way too many, which included some my father had releived some nazis of and sold them all. now, gun free, i rely on my first line of defense.....a smile.

funny about the f. extinguisher, lowell. when were in h school, we tried to crash this chicano street party and ended up with a bunch of rabid dudes hopping in their cars and chasing us down the street. one guy pulls up along side and throws a brick at me and it lands on my hood. so i told my friend in the back seat to use the f. extinguisher o them. he sticks the hose out the window and sprays down everyone in the car next to us real good and all we heard was a bunch of screaming and i'm not sure, but i think he mighta crashed his car. we just kept going. the rest of the cars just stayed behind with him. this was in like 1959-60 ish before the cholos and everyone else had guns. yikes.
