Brazil wants Betancourt as boss of UNESCO

Brazil is considering nominating Ingrid Betancourt for the post of director of UNESCO, the UN agency for education and culture, Brazilian magazine Veja reports.

The idea to nominate the French-Colombian former politician and FARC hostage reportedly was suggested to Brazilian President Luis Ignacion Lula da Silva who was enthusiastic about the initiative.

Senator Cristovam Barque, former Education Minister and currently in the opposition party PDT, suggested nominating Betancourt and thinks the candidacy of the French-Colombian can count on a broad support.

The post of Director General of UNESCO will become vacant in 2009, when Japanese Koichiro Matsuura steps down.

Certainly, Ingrid Betancourt would make a superb director of UNESCO. However, were she to accept that appointment it would put her on the sidelines of Colombian politics. I think that her abilities and unique ethical stance would be put to better use within the Colombian national government.
