I used to like Uribe, not anymore. Except for being tough on the guerrillas and making security better he hasn't been good for Colombia. It turns out he's to the right of W. Bush. Subsidies for the rich, no bid contracts etc. I started an import business in Colombia. One of the requirements to get a license from DIAN is a verifiable net worth of 100 million pesos. This rule came out under Uribes govt. If your net worth is not over 100 million pesos you cannot legally get certain import licenses. It is actually good for me as it keeps competition down. But it is really unfair to those that don't have that net worth.

Continued concentration of power in the hands of the few. SUCKS!

I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Makopp- I import a synthetic product used by some industries. (I can't be specific, I don't like giving people ideas LOL) Altough for my next import I am going to bring multinational brand but it takes a lot of money so I'm trying to find investors.
I'm sure the Canadian subsidies are not targeted to rich people. They certainly don't go to drug lords and beauty queens/actresses like they do in Colombia. Could you imagine the outrage if Vanessa Williams got US agricultural subsidies?

One could indeed compare the agricultural subsidies given to big agro industrialists in Europe and the USA by conservative politicians to the favours given to Uribe´s buddies as mentioned in the article.

Farm subsidies comparing to corruption? OMG! You guys are lost. Farm subsidies go to poor farmers trying to make a living and competing with third world countries like Brazil......Money that comes from rich people for the campaign of rich people and proceeds going back to rich people CAN NOT BE COMPARED. This is what is called a kick back. The poor farmer here does not see anything in the way of help.

This is a class system and the poor exist to make the rich money. GOT IT?

makopp5 - stick to Colombia. Romy title for this post was "best investment in Colombia". You should really be better prepared before you launch headfirst into these types of arguments.

If you were going to ask a question about Canada it should have been - for those who have those who have received agricultural subsidies how much have they donated to the prime-ministerial campaign

Agricultural subsidies were set up after World War II in order to ensure stable food production. They are part of the statute in Canada, the US, and the European Union. They are not a presidential privilege to hand out to those who you owe.

Oh, and EAFIT is "thinking" of hiring you...so they haven't made you an offer yet then?
