Satan says on Nov 5, 2009, 17:36:

In the restaurant/bar business you must have one or more of the following to succeed... Location location location, exceptional cuisine or low prices or at the very least rent/overhead so low you can afford to run the business and basically just work for wages. Unfortunately for Albert he had none of the above. It was apparent from the first time I walked into his place he wouldn't be around for long. His location, as compared to the other popular watering holes/eateries in Lleras, was not the optimum and the quality of his food was nothing exceptional, mediocre food at best and his prices were, obviously, not competitive enough to draw customers to his place.

Another one bites the dust!

Satan says on Nov 5, 2009, 19:14:

Hmmmmm.... Jamaica is closing? Maybe it's because of the owners preoccupation with making the "perfect" drink concoction and it taking so freaking long to get one. Or maybe it was because the music was extremely ear piercing load it drove his customers away. Or maybe it was because the owner was simply bored living in Medellin.... I am under the understanding it was the latter.

It's very rare for anyone to sell a "profitable" business. Most business that are not profitable, but create cash for and wages for the owner, are the ones you will find for sale. There is of course the exception to the rule and this might be one of those. All the best larryrn!

I went to the Barking Spider twice about 3 weeks ago. Albert obviously put a lot of work and money into making it a nice place. And it is. Me and Gloid got a hamburger special that was 8mil. The beers were 2mil if I remember right (domestic). Anyway, for Lleras, that's more than reasonable. But the place was absolutely dead. It was very sad to not see it busy. I guess it has to be location, even though it is only a block from the park.

When he first opened his prices were higher. He lowered his beer prices only after realizing he wasn't getting the business he thought he would. Too little too late! I guess he hoped to gain new customers with his new and improved pricing structure. Not to mention he initially had his main bar upstairs (BIG MISTAKE) and when people, potential customers, walked by they couldn't see anyone inside so they moved on. He subsequently moved the bar downstairs but again, too little too Iate! I defer to my previous comments as to why he did not succeed.

I would have to say that the medellin market seems to be a nightmare, and very difficult. One may say 'location' however the Barking Spider was (is) a very well set up bar; take a look at Escocia - same sort of deal; nice bar, great location, and still no market. Now compare that to the BBC or Irish Pub in Bogota - same 'theme' and FULL every night. I just think that the Paisa market is very very difficult. Kudos to Albert for giving it a good go.

I believe he would like to sell it for 80 millones, everything included except for his personal effects. If you add up the bar & kitchen equipment, TVs, audio equipment, computer/register, posters, etc. He´s almost giving you all the reformations which are less than a year old, for free. All in all, quite cheap for that part of town. To put in perspective, That´s 20 million less than I got for my prima in Belen and my deal didnt include any equipment or the franchise, just the right to kick my arse out of the POS building! Perhaps Satan can pick it up and show everyone how to run a place. Remember 90% of bars/restaurants fail within the first 5 years. It´s not easy. 6 million a month for rent is the toughest obstacle to overcome.

This is a sad event but, unfortunately not a surprise. I have been to the Spider on several occasions and spoken with Albert. He put a lot of effort into the bar and the result, in my opinion, was very pleasing. Maybe it's just my gringo preference, but, to me, it was the nicest bar I have been in here. If this bar was in the US, I am sure it would do well if located properly. As a side note, in my visits to the Spider, I only met other PBHers one time. It probably wouldn't have made a difference but, I am surprised that there wasn't more support from members of the forum.

It is hard for a gringo to operate a successful business in Colombia. People here are an envies and clickiest sort and will avoid your business trash talk it out of existance if they know your a gringo short of you being Brad Pitt. They just could not stand to see a gringo do well in Colombia it just makes the waters turn brown. jiji

But beyond that there are only two successful small business models I know of in Colombia and one is surrounded by the drug trade, either selling them, transporting them or washing the money.

That is of course unless you are one of the social elite here? This society is the clickiest I have ever run into and well gringo can come and visit and be welcomeed but for the "money" to come to your place and hang out? You have got to be somebody. It is all about that and any US business model will just fall flat on its face.

So if you have one of those two things you can have the worst location, the highest prices and the shitiest food and still do well.

Welcome to Colombia.

Hate to see this, I have enjoyed the Barking Spider many times as it is probably one of the nicest and most gringo freindly bars around lleras. And Albert is an experienced bar operator with excellent spanish. The last time I was in there his leg was in a cast but he was not out of business due to his accident. He or possibly the landlord, but probably him spent a fortune remodeling the place into a really nice bar. But I never saw it very busy, and in the same hours that the other bars a block away were packed. Some things just dont make sense,, my thinking is that he had a good gringo business but not much locals business and there simply are not enough gringos coming yet to have a gringo centered business of this type. Thanks Albert for the effort, dont let it get you down,, try again somewhere else and make a fortune!! I am a business owner and when things look bleak I always remember I read somewhere that Col Sanders failed at everything he tried until he was well in his fifties and then cooked up a batch of chicken. Damn sometimes it is like talking to 12 year olds on this board.

But go ahead and listen to thes Colombains and when your business goes tits up they will all be laughing behind your back, celebrating our failures. I have seen it Colombian on Colombian an so if it does not go double for a gringo I think someone is smokin something....

Same old BIG mistake I see over and over again. Colombians and wanna be's getting all offended when somone points out the truth in their society and how it differs from main street America. So what happens gringo falls into that and loses his ass. I am not and have never let it happen to me. I grew up calling a spade a spade and not all this micky mouse feel good bullshit name to make someone feel good. There is no room for that in business. If you want to talk politics then OK.

In the US you can have the biggest dive in the worst part of town but yet serve an elegant meal with a top rated chef at a good price and have a line out the door. Try that business model here? It will fall flat on its face.

But Colombians have such low frickin self esteem that you can not even hint at criticism without them blowing it all up as an attack on them and they go for your throat. It gets fokin old.

Honestly oneformil, I dont buy the we wont patronize you because you are a gringo angle. Most of my clients were colombian and I gained a lot of respect from them for busting my ass, treating them as equals and bending over backwards for every client. Probably how I kept it alive for 5 years. Yes I have seen envious colombians, but when they start to see you as a down to earth friendly person, they drop the attitude. When we used to get 200 people for the super bowl, 150 were colombian. After big Nacional games or Barca vs. RMA classicos with 150 people, many colombian clients always were very polite and came up said hi to me on the way in, and thanked me on their way out. Catering to foreigners has to be just a small facet of your business plan. Not the main objective. I hate to use the word chichipatos but you have to help the cause or the cause wont be there. I dont want to make anyone feel bad, and we all know what it is like to be down on your luck, but for example, go say to Timeout and not spend anything or thinking you did your part buying a bottle of water sitting there from 3 to 6 hours enjoying free NFL when they have a lot of overhead costs, is unnacceptable. Especailly when I have to hear how that you make sooooo much money saved from a great salary or from your businesses, make $100k a year in the market or have 3 condos in Boca Raton. Either someone is lying or someone is a real cheapskate. I already have guys pissed at me because I keep telling the manager at Timeout to charge 20k minimum on NFL, UFC, etc. per person and pay it upon entering. Funny, one time at Alberts a table full of guys asked me why I sold my place. I answered because to have 40 guys sitting around and buying only 650k in food or drink every sunday for NFL isnt going to pay the bills. And many, every week, would buy the cheapest Del Oeste hamburguer and ask for a glass of water from the tap, which is when I noticed my faux paux as all the guys were eating Albert´s wednesday 2 x 1 burger special and glasses of tap water. "sigh".

MaBarker says on Nov 6, 2009, 06:00:

The problems with the BarkingSpider had everything to do with the design. All that could be seen from the front was 4 or so tables in the front patio that were packed in too close, then floor to ceiling doors right behind. As pointed out above, the bar was on the second floor in the beginning, and it looked 'closed' from out on the sidewalk. Being so close to the sidewalk when sitting at the front tables left you as a sitting duck for pobres asking for money, vendedores, etc. The location being off the park with little foot traffic obviously had something to do with it.

You can't do anything about the location, but in the beginning, if the main part was centered on the 1st floor, well lit inside, no panel doors 8 feet from the entrance, maybe things would be different.

yes and can I say congrads on your business. Now can I also say that when you have a name, when you are someone up in the social pages you attract those kinds of people and trust me when I tell you that they are going to SPEND money, spend their rent check if they have to or their kids college funds to make an impression because when the chisma comes down on you being broke? Dude in Colombia you are dead. It is a feeding frenzy. So it is all about maintaining the illussion and being seen with those worth$$$ being seen with. It is all about that in a class society.

I am a down to earth person and all of that and I don't worry about the people nice to me at the door or leaving or my clients. What I see every day is them thinking their peso has more value than my peso because I am gringo. If you are not experiencing this well then where are you? I will be right there! but for me I have got to be a ruthless hard ass to make money here. Everyone wants to be your friend and you will end up with lots of friends and go out of business making them happy. O I have a lot of people I know, I am friendly with them but in business they better bring their game face as I will make them a good deal, honor the deal but I am not there to make friends. I am there to make money. Fi doing tha talso makes me friends then good I have friends.

I was asked when I moved a location and the people were all around there asking why and they will miss me and whatever. My simple answer to them was that I am in business to make money, no other reason. That location was not making money so I moved it. That is how you get respect, I heard them mumbling...That is how the gringo does business and so on. They were to the best of my knowledge not making money there and well just stuck around to have chats with people they knew I guess or to not seem to be failing by closing? the business had become a part of them. No business is ever a part of me. They make money or they lose money and I do not beat dead horses, I run with winners.

Sorry for this guy closing or not sorry if it is a good move for him? I hope he moves to another location taking what he learned and make the changes necessary and keeps on.

"But Colombians have such low frickin self esteem that you can not even hint at criticism without them blowing it all up as an attack on them and they go for your throat. It gets fokin old."

How true. It drives me nuts!

The only thing worse than a gringo invasion in Medellin, is the cheap NMG, which defiines about 98% of gringos in town. I wish all the cheapskate gringos would all go back to the states.

"I would suspect lots of theses businesses are into the money laundering business, rents and affluance are not really important for them,"

Not just businessess, but the whole damn city which was built by cocaine dollars.

"There's no room for wrong decisions and stupidity here"

For gringos, but for Colombians it seems to be their M.O. yet somehow it works out for many of them. Or does money laundering cocaine profits have anything to do with it?

Mr. Saltador, when looking at my picture, why do you see a guy? I think you need a visit to your optometrist.

After you've had a couple of kids and are a little stretched out, men like the tightness of the back door.

After a few times, I have enjoyed it ever since.
