A Request Regarding New Members

I've just deleted the account and the post and comments of another newbie who came here for advice and was torn apart by a pack of wolves. Basically every newbie who has dared to post here has been received as a troll lately. I understand that it has been quite lively here and trolls have been around and still are; we have not got rid of all of them, but even if I've been critized for not being firm enough I rather put up with a troll or two than delete innocent people.

I have a request to all of our good members:
a little bit more consideration with newbies. Yes, I know you are very smart people and recognize a troll as soon as he (there are no female trolls?) opens his mouth but I'd appreciate it even more if you dropped me or any other mod a quiet PM instead or flagged the troll comment. We deal with the situation as soon as we can. Do NOT feed the trolls, do not engage in a discussion with a troll, pretend they are not there. (Sorry, this kind of entertainment is not good for the forum).
Cheers

I was not sure as I KNEW that her Spanish was native and educated, even if there was evidence that she might not have been who she claimed to be. I'm glad it was all sorted out in good time and we have another valuable female contributor here.

This is a most profound thread in deed. I have a question.Do people who love god have to ask for forgiveness for attacking other members in the most hanest of manners? Is it ok to say oddly creepy things that are vile if you love god?

I am just curious.

Some of these posters even though they appear ancient in their pictures do not seemed to have changed much in thier behavior from being bed wedding little tattle tales and brown nosers that they truly are at heart. I'll bet some of you sat in class and always had your hand up for the right answer "ooh ooh ooh pick pick me" the same way you do now with your petty complaints and flag throwing and the hint of a slight in your direction.

You know I agree that some people just flame anyone for bieng a troll and sometimes it gets real old...but to the new members, atleast use the search function and check to see if you're not beating a dead horse...Colombian crime, Colombian women, cocaine busts...its old.

And PBS...I might disagree with filth. But I never attack people telling them things about thier mothers and talking the kinds of trash that you have resorted to. And again you being as old as you are I figured you would have stopped that stuff oh maybe 30 -40 years ago?

karion says on May 29, 2009, 18:48:

For what it is worth, this kind of shit happens almost everywhere on the internet. Established communities invariably give birth to trolls who are determined, no matter what, to create new accounts and stir up drama. As a result, the non-drama members get suspicious at every new account and there is a ritualistic hazing to attempt to suss out the trolls.

The seasoned internet surfer knows this dynamic and rolls with it, ribbing and all. The established members usually hold back for a while, waiting to see if the newbie asking restaurant advice questions is a one-time jangler or someone who is going to stick around. Those fed up with the troll reincarnates have their pitchforks ready, somewhat understandably, and are on the hunt for any indication that the newbie is a troll in sheep's clothing.

Some of the newbies leave in disgust or confusion. Some understand the dynamic and wait it out. This isn't at all unique to PBH, as I have seen it all over the great world wide web. I don't think there is a solution, much like there really isn't a solution to social misfits you encounter in your daily life. You just sort of ignore the shitstarters, take your ribbings, and decide whether it is a community/social circle that is worth the investment.

Again, for what it is worth, in my experience, "starving the beast" is the most efficient way of dealing with hard-core trolls, particularly those who were once ingratiated in the community, but were eventually judged to be shit-starters. What gets them off is the suspicion, drama and possible outing - the witch hunt. You want to discourage a habitual troll? Don't respond, don't accuse, don't react. It is the only antidote I have seen that really works. Rather than chime in with a "oh, it is the ghost of [whatever troll]", just don't answer the question presented. The trolls aren't looking for legitimate advice anyway - that couldn't be more boring - so legitimate advice is actually a form of "starving the beast." You feed them when you create a controversy, as they need drama to endure.

Okay, that was wordy and shit. Just some insight from a newbie in this particular corner of the internet who doesn't mind the hazing.

See, Robert Scorpio, and I don't know you from Adam, or anyone else on this board, but you are a newbie bitching about the moderators.

This is the ultimate cliche of a determined troll, and I am violating my own advice by even responding to you. But seriously, so unoriginal. I have always sort of wondered what kind of person tries to sneak back into the party after the hosts and guests kick them out. Myself, I would probably sleep it off and never show my face there again, and, in more lucid moments, try to learn something from the experience. As you might expect, most people are laughing at you, a few kind souls feel sorry for you. Only the fellow social misfits are cheering you on, and they were kicked out the party, too.

There are two ways to get back to the party: abide by the social customs of the group, even if you disagree with them, or sneak back in through a window. Only one of them earns you the respect of your peers. The other just makes you seem like an unbalanced social misfit. While I generally have sympathy and compassion for social misfits, the ones who are self-destructive and refuse to learn from their mistakes are best ignored. A great definition of insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a different result, and the unbalanced social misfits are the poster children of this.

lpdiver, a newbie wouldn't be bitching about the moderators. It is the classic, unoriginal, cliche "tell" of a banned former member.

I think the lack of creativity bothers me the most, and I don't have a dog in this hunt, as I fly my newbie flag proudly. It is dumb, and dumb irritates me. Also, it is the stupid of repeatedly sneaking through the window, only to do the very same shit that probably got you booted in the first place.

I have witnessed (elsewhere) some spectacular trolls, who spend months developing an online persona. Kind of akin to that booted party guest who changes clothes and maybe their accent, who, after a few drinks, finally reveals their madness. While they aren't any less batshit nuts or socially challenged, they are a little more interesting.

I am new to this site, not the internet. It isn't a difficult distinction, really.

As I said, this is not unique to PBH, and I have a great deal of experience with the internet generally and trolls in particular. This truly does happen everywhere, and a client of mine (one of the most popular news aggregators on the internet) has a stunningly sophisticated system for dealing with this. And even with that technology, they are usually outmatched by the determination of the social misfits.

I am just especially mouthy today, and earnestly protective over PBH, as a week of going through old threads gave me a great deal of helpful advice for an upcoming trip to Bogota.

The only thing I seen from the comments is most people are good here, only thinking of the welfare of the poor maid and not the rich poster whom I will assume is sleeping on a new bed them self.

By making jokes about it this will hopefully guilt this rich but cheap person into doing the right thing and buy a new mattress which are by the way dirt cheap anyways. There is no hate here only compassion for the less fortunate.

Interesting thread. There is no doubt that the wolves not only scare off new members, but also lurkers who would like to join in. They could have been valuable contributors to the site, and made pbh better. So in the end, the wolves only damage the future of pbh itself. Sad, but true. But I guess pbh is like everywhere else, people are different. Most are totally ok, but then you have the odd narrow-minded guy who cannot see anything beyond his own nose. Constructive criticism is clearly a foreign language for some, and some characters on here really amaze me (and others). You may wonder what they are like in real life as well, and you can only feel sorry for them. The newbies who make it through the "first round" though, are certainly able to speak up for themselves. And thus probably good contributors in the long run.

dwmte7 and others, again, I assure you that I am not a former troll or a banned member, and if you are in Bogota the week I am there, I will buy you a cold beverage and you can see for yourself.

Look, I was an asshole last night. One troll started with me, and the login was kind of close to the login of another. I didn't pay close enough attention and confused the two of them, which is an embarrassing mistake. It was the internet equivalent of getting drunk and insulting one of the hosts and I am now horrified.

It is one thing to misspell Candelaria, then frijtangas, but quite another to be a dick to a trusted member, all because I thought I was smacking down a former troll who was doing the very thing this thread was trying to quell.

The moral of the story, as it always is, is to be cautiously polite to strangers, and to pay attention to names. Again, RobertJorge, I am really sorry. I confused your login with someone else's, and while the breadcrumbs of their posts are now gone, the two were kind of similar, I promise. Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Jun 2, 2009, 12:13:

What is an Internet Troll/ Forum troll?
An "Internet troll" or "Forum Troll" or "Message Board Troll" is a person who posts outrageous message to bait people to answer. Forum Troll delights in sowing discord on the forums. A troll is someone who inspires flaming rhetoric, someone who is purposely provoking and pulling people into flaming discussion. Flaming discussions usually end with name calling and a flame war.
----
Finally, trolls create a paranoid environment, such that a casual criticism by a new arrival can elicit a ferocious and inappropriate backlash.

When trolls are ignored they step up their attacks, desperately seeking the attention they crave. Their messages become more and more foul, and they post ever more of them.

Alternatively, they may protest that their right to free speech is being curtailed.

It must be a little exhausting to speak with authority on behalf of all women who speak the casual language of American English.

For the record, I use the expression colloquially, not literally, although this last time, I am making an exception, after the fact.

Yes, too many commas. I know.

LOL DOUG!
And KARION, being somebodies "Huckleberry" is NOT a compliment. In the old times this term was used to call somebody out, or stand up to somebody. As Doc Holliday used in Tombstone. In other words, someone could say."I'll take your challenge" or I'll be your Huckleberry" is the same..

However, if I get down in time, I really do not care if your big, small, have one or two balls, woman or man one leg to stand!
I'll sit down with anybody will to listen to my woes..and buy me a drink. So in that regard, I too will be your Huckleberry !

karion says on Jun 5, 2009, 13:15:

Okay, folks, I yield the floor on this topic. I thought I was wise enough to the internets, but clearly, I am a young grasshopper that has much to learn about attempting to join an established community.

Two things: first, this site is really an amazing resource and, while I just discovered it while researching the trip to Bogota, I gathered that you were often harassed by formerly banned trolls. I lurked and read for a while, thought I got a sense of who and what was up, but made a gloriously bad misstep by confusing logins and all credibility was shot to hell. But, I guess my point is

2. Really, not everyone is a troll or a formerly banned member, and that is the point of this whole thread. Sometimes, we are genuine jackasses who misspell things and confuse logins, but our intentions are great.

3. I had no idea that the use of the phrase "has the sack" would instigate such suspicion. Sadly, I use it a lot, among friends, and it never occurred to me that it would be perceived as an internet "tell"* of my gender. I'll say it for (hopefully) the last time, but when I get to Bogota, I will post the place to meet up and you can decide for yourself whether my occasional (often) swearing should deprive my of my girl parts. I will post it in this thread, as I made a jackass out of myself right here.

*the use of "tell", in parentheses, was my version of internet humor, as most people only think guys play poker, and while I fully admit I suck at it, I am a girl who plays poker. I am also a girl who occasionally uses the phrase "sack the fuck up," but I never intended for it to be any kind of a feminist statement. It is just vulgar discourse, which sometimes amuses me.

4. This went beyond two things. Math is hard (DO YOU SEE WHAT I DID THERE? MADE A GENDER JOKE?). But really, I learned a lot from reading your old conversations and threads and for that reason alone, I cannot be pissed off. I really do apologize for any missteps, and that apology is unqualified, but you should know this: not everyone is a formerly banned asshole, looking to stir up drama. Sometimes, we are our own brand of assholes.

karion says on Jun 5, 2009, 13:44:

Oh, and also Catfish?

I am nearly 90% certain that I have never used the phrase "I am your huckleberry." For the first point, it had no meaning to me (until you schooled me). I don't use phrases I don't understand.

But, and I am busy at work, I recognize that maybe you used it in a post that referenced me, and I might have ignored it, or worse. If I saluted one of your posts that called me a hucleberry, I apologize.

Sometimes, I wish the internet came with validations. I sort of believe you can do that on your own, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. The folks who kinda sorta think maybe I am not [insert returned troll] now know differently, the moderatorrs know my IP address, and shit, I am really done about defending myself on this.

Yes...Some say he died of what may be called a Chinese Or Oriental Orgasm.
I handled a scene like this while I was a cop. Often people hang themselves in this fashion accidentally. While masturbating they tie something around their neck to restrict the flow of oxygen to the brain. The idea is to bring yourself to the point of passing out exactly the same time you orgasm. Many times this goes awry. The people pass out and literally hang themselves by passing out and not being able to untie themselves. This is actually somewhat common unfortunately.
I fond it very strange Carradine was in Thailand, (land of the pedophiles) hanging out in a closet, with a rope around his neck!

Now, Karion, you may still want to pursue the life of grasshopper..just let me know when you get up to the point where you do this to yourself. I would like to watch!
