I love that book -Gabo is my favorite author. Last time I read it, I really took my time and enjoyed his writing. The man has a way with words to say the least.

azunoman, I certainly understand your feeling about his politics. Many of us agree that he is misguided with his support of Communist regimes like Cuba.

Nevertheless, give the devil his due(only a figure of speech). His writings rank up there with the very best. As indicated earlier, I read as many of his works as I could find in English. I have not read his last one but understand it is not up to his usual standards.

Must admit I didn't want any of his novels to end. At least he let you know at the beginning about the fatal fall. The story of the lost sailor still fascinates me. I wonder how much of it is true.

One of my favorite authors of all time.
I read the Cien años de soledad years ago and it was a great read and always recommend it.
Here is a list of other books de Gabo that I have enjoyed: El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba (No One Writes to the Colonel), Cronicas de una muerte anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold), Noticia de un secuestro (News of a Kidnapping ) and most recently I have yet to finish it Vivir para contarla (Living to Tell the Tale)

Cien años is a tough read especially if you don't copy the chart of characters so you can keep up with who's who. The book, however is almost circular in its outlook, as characters repeat, time and again, the experience of earlier generations. You're in the town, you're in the past, you're in the mind of a character, all in one sentence! Marquez pulled off the feat of naming all his characters while only using a total of about five names. That is why this book is a hard read

Also "El general en su labertino" is a good read. Traces Simón Bolivar from the time he had to flee Bogotá, his journey down the Río Magdalena , his journey through Cartagena to his death in Santa Marta.

another great writer with some great stories that follow a historical line in South America is Isabel Allende. Chilian I think, however born in Peru. Her book Ines of my Soul is really good and follows a conquistadora 'settling' in Chile. It has a focus on Cartagena prior to moving down through Peru and then to Chile. Recommended read. She has been compared to GM.
