Attacked in Barrio Providencia (Santiago, Chile)

So, there I am at the corner of Septiembre and Avenida Pedro de Valdivia and this homeless looking guy approaches me and mutters some street slang. I assume he is looking for some change and as I dig in my pocket, he pulls out what appears to be a knife and narrowly misses my face as he attempts to stab me. I catch him out of my peripheral vision and vear back slightly, so he misses my face and instead catched me with his knuckles on my chest.

Shocked, I take a few steps back and he turns into a ferocious little bastard poised to strike again. So, I take off my boot and go at his ass with some gusto because I am now pissed off. He trips and falls stumbling backwards into some flower bed of sorts on the side of the road. I take a few whacks at his head and he covers up pretty well, so I go to work on his chest, stomach and knees, nuts, etc. After 10-12 good whacks a good semaritan steps in and gets between me and the guy. The street guy then throws the weapon into the street as I guess he sensed that the cops were going to be called and it turns out to be a screwdriver.

I'm still pissed off, but relieved not to have a screwdriver sticking out of my face or neck.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Always be aware of your surroundings on the streets. Even the unlikeliest of characters can cause you to have a real bad day. There are some very skilled pickpockets on the METRO here as well. I just had a friend that had his I-Phone ripped off on the METRO without a clue that it had been lifted from his front jean pocket. Gringo beware.......
