I haven't really been going out at night but I remember it having a really very decent bar scene, cool people in shabby chic places, great cocktails, good beer, good ambience. I am going to duck out for a couple this evening. Also has a couple of very nice restaurants.

do you really think that guy is me? did it ever cross your mind that i might be blatantly portraying a stereotype for kicks and have been on this board for the last 4 years under other "not so brazen" guise?

thank you for participating in my social experiment, sam. it is guys like you that continue to plague society by casting labels on people whom you have never had the pleasure of meeting. keep up the good work and continue making blind statements as a shortcut to thinking. maybe you should lay off the oxygen as it has obviously clouded your already poor judgement.

have a wonderful day

I am from Europe Kurious, so although we in the UK probably gave you guys all those fucked up measurements, we have since realised the error of our ways.

Go convert it yourself because farenheit means nothing to me

They mock the French but sisteme international is the best thing ever

By the way I am getting a lovely sun tan here, that hole in the sky ain't so bad after all

johnny2009 says on Sep 14, 2009, 18:31:

No idea Kurious, but think on this, cool air holds less water so the humidity really is not going to be bothering you are 15 degrees. The rain might piss you off some though, it is a very wet place.

I bought fresh caught merluza from the fish market by the river a couple of days ago, it was stunning poached with caperberries

Kurious you mean which other parts of Valdivia am I going to visit? Well I had a walk down Coronel Santiago Bueras the other day and got lost, this afternoon I went past the church where the monks hang out, past the spanish fort and back up to the centre via the notary.

Weird thing here is my Citibank ATM card only works in one ATM at one branch of Santander Santiago. It is opposite the bar which is both weird and convenient. Here is the bar

That little old lady is there every day, she sells lottery tickets

Here is a pic of vALdivia fish market that i just googled

Merluza is a kind of Hake-can't give Hake away where I live because it's so slimy on the outside and tasteless on the inside-too many other delicious fish to eat here.

johnny - the season are changin down that way. in another month or two it should be amazing weather for that whole region (los lagos). is valdivia in region 9 or 10?

johnny2009 says on Sep 15, 2009, 06:59:

Kurious, I am not saying that the sun doesn't shine, it is out now. I am just saying that it also rains every day too. Yes merluza is hake. It is a white fish, not as meaty as cod haddock or corvina but also not sloppy like other fish. I am getting a sun tan because as I said, there is a hole in the sky.

Whitewidow, Valdivia is in Region 10, it seems to no longer be in Los Lagos, it is now head of its own mini administrative region called Los Ríos. Los Ríos is itself within Los Lagos. I think people were upset when Pinochet put the region's admin under Puerto Montt and Michelle Bachelet turned it back about 4 years ago. I think I have the political history vaguely correct.

I have spent a lot of time here in the past, and probably have sampled every month, I am standing by my claim that it rains every day. They say it rains 365 days a year in Valdivia, but in Chiloe it rains 370 days a year.

whitewidow says on Sep 15, 2009, 07:26:

there is a rainchart on the valdivia page in wikipedia. there is a distinctive wet season and dry season. i have some friends that have salmon farms down in that region. as i understand it, they are all over the place down there but have had some significant disease issues over the past year or two. i will be down in a month or two myself.

To be honest i was dissapointed with Valdivia. All the Chileans used to go on about was that Valdivia was so beautiful and all this german influence down there. Unfortunately it was destroyed by an earthquake and now I don´t it´s so beautiful, Valpo beats it hands down. It´s surroundings are beautiful however and that´s where you should head to.

johnny2009 says on Sep 15, 2009, 18:43:

Valparaíso and Valdivia simply are not worthy of a comparison in the same way that Minneapolis and Cape Town aren't either. One is a massive port city, the other is far more residential. I don't personally think that Valdivia is particularly attractive, but German influence runs deeper than lederhosen and gabled houses. I should not "head to" Valparaíso because I am here for a very specific reason which has nothing to do with pottering about Valparaíso.

As for the great Chilean quake, if you take a look at the pics of the crumbled streets, you will see that the architecture has not changed much and you are fooling yourself if you think it was previously full of timber framed cottages and Volkswagens.
