I am no Rio fan (but it is stunning) or expert, but I would always rent on the ground when you are there, usually through the newspapers and the telephone. Ask at a newsstand which newspaper has the best classificados imoveis, and when your looking through them you want apartamentos para alugar, maybe temporada as it is only six months. There are a lot of expensive accomodation in a big tourist city like Rio, but you can get a good deal if you go through the newspapers and keep looking.

In Rio I think the newspaper O Globo which has the most classificados on a Sunday.

Rio is divided into Zona Norte and Zona Sul, Zona Sul is considered the safe one. Posting a question on gringoes.com is your best plan for different areas.

Remember Carnival starts Friday Feb. 20th so it will be a busy month. Watch does Cariocas, this is a city whose people are proud of partying, not working.
