Anyone been to Porto Alegre?

I am interested in checking out Porto Alegre, Brasil and I do not
know much about the city, things to do, places to go, lodging,
nightlife, the people. I have heard good things but nothing from someone
experiencing the city first hand. Has anyone lived or traveled there? What are
your impressions? Thanks.

Never liked Porto Alegre myself. Spent a bit of time there. Don't particularly like the south of Brazil. It is quite a hectic city, people seem very busy, lots of traffic and noise, lots of people. Different to Curitiba which is more planned and sedate (and cold in Winter), but both quite boring I think. Good for successful football clubs though!

well, I was born in south Brazil, in Porto Alegre, proudly....Porto Alegre may not be a cup of tea for conventional tourists who seek something more "exciting"........its downtown is seedy....I admit it.....but its nightlife is one of the best in Brazil ever with the hottest and smartest girls....

south Brazil may be boring for those guys who like sex tourism, plenty of samba, axé and other stuff....some things rather "exotic" that are easily found in northeastern or Rio de Janeiro, for instance.......in fact, most european perverts hate south because girls behave like europeans in their opinion....what I like though....

as for Curitiba, it's the cleanest and greenest city in this country........

finally, south Brazil has good places to visit even those that haven't been shown by publicity.......

if you need more information about my hometown, please let me know....

busy people are present everywhere....it depends on the guys you hang out with...but you can be sure you'll be likely treated well, better than in other parts of the country where any tourist is hailed as a cash machine.....

Sai fora Alvinho!

"south Brazil may be boring for those guys who like sex tourism,"

Who brought this up??? I'm talking about exploring Alagoas to Maranhao, the best part of the World in my opinion for travelling compared to other parts of the World I know.

How many foreigners living in Teresina? Who goes to Juazeiro do norte for the "sex tourism"? Paid sex and worse exists everywhere in Brazil where there are no tourists as well. How about addressing these problems as well.

Foreign tourism is in its infacy in the northeast and what I found were nordestinos who it was my absolute pleasure and luck to encounter and who have been, in my opinion, left behind by the south/south east Brazil. Whys that then?

well, it's not hard to draw the conclusion that you haven't met loads of foreigners around the country....obviously, I'm not generalizing though.......
