The Problem with Deleting Offensive Threads

Deleting posts and threads that violate the rules and policies of this site is like wiping the offender's slate clean. Leave the offending posts/threads, at least for a while - and deal with the poster (warning/fishbowl/whatever) - and let people know about about the consequences (maybe edit the post to note what action was taken with the poster). I don't like all the ugliness that gets posted here - but deleting it as though it never happened is not effective and it ignores reality - it is borderline "make believe". Leave those posts up for a while and deal more harshly with the offenders - let people see very clearly what kind of posts get what kind of consequences.

By the by, this is not directed at the mods as they are simply following instructions -- this is feedback for the site's Chief Policy Maker In Charge.
