paying for PBH?

I realize that the previous thread was closed after it wandered off ranting into the wilderness (not without having spouted some prophetic wisdom), but I just wanted to offer a few more suggestions.

If the goal is to increase signal and decrease noise, than turning PBH into a pay site may not be the best way to go about this.

First, it forces every member of the group to make a calculus about how much access to the site is worth. Some members who have been very helpful only show up once in a while (generally because they are leading productive and fulfilled lives) and by charging for the site you will lose many of them.

Second, why would knowledgeable people pay to inform the less knowledgeable? By charging a fee, you will restrict PBH to those for whom the site is an important source of social interaction (whether through pre-school bickering or otherwise), OR to those who need an answer to a set of specific questions, because those are values folks are willing to pay for. But you would be far less likely to attract those who simply want to others a good turn by offering up some helpful experiences, or 'experts' who already have all the information they need.

Instead, why not disaggregate utilitarian/technical information on this site (of which a great deal already exists) from the common warp of more or less entertaining spew, such as information on legal issues, medical and health, specific travel questions, etc, and stick it in a sidebar where it can be accessed for a fee ($5 one time, $9.99/m). Any member whose helpful comment gets posted to this sidebar would have one free 'access point' credited to their account. This would encourage helpful contributions, because everyone likes to have 'credits' and people would start competing to have their comments published on the pay sidebar.

This way, people who are looking for serious answers to specific questions don't get shoved in the sand box with the hair-pullers, AND you incentivize useful behavior.

Dude that comedy is already free! I think the old saying is "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" In a weird way it seems to apply here.

Do you see anything in there that might, just might, suggest I didn't write the name portion? Well, for starters, dude, there's the quote marks. Those suggest a quotation of someone else. Now I don't want to hold your hand through the whole lesson, but there's another very conspicuous pointer in there. See it, big guy?

Dear GregYohn,

Greg if it is okay with you I would like to give you some advice that I hope you find helpful. Let me start by saying I have enjoyed reading many of your posts from the time you were building onto your home , hearing your wife was pregnant, to the birth of your son. I really believe you have a lot of knowledge to share and that you enjoy helping others with useful information or advice.

As far as people attacking you or harassing you whenever you post, well that isn't right at all. But Greg stop feeding into their attacks. You are playing right into their hands. I am sure they enjoy seeing you get upset and watching you respond. Remember, Those who anger you control you. I like to try and keep this in the back of my head because it keep me from losing my temper most of the time. Whenever someone makes a nasty comment remember "It's a small thing to a Giant."

Yohn at times you bring it on yourself. An example would be the article that was posted about the mail order bride from China. you shouldn't of even made a comment that it was posted in the wrong section. Yohn who cares if it was posted in the wrong section. You had nothing to do with this post and should of just let it go and move on to another post. The site has moderators ( who have a thankless job) to make that call.

I hope you take this post as someone that only wishes you the best. Hope you continue posting and don't sweat the small stuff.

For the record Greg, you have written on this forum many times about your flipina ex. Don't know what you wrote to Brians, but reread some of your own comments and you will see what you wrote. I even remember the choice 4-letter name that you ascribe to your ex. I don't know her so I would never have called her that. You did.

As Corey3368 wrote above, give it a rest. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Like Papi de Alejo said Greg, I also had no idea there was any communication between you guys (Brians) in the past. But being here for 4 years now, I can remember you calling your Filipina ex "PUTA,PUTA,PUTA". I also remember she wasn't the only one. (ex from overseas) But your information / confirmation about Brians kind of proves something, no? Why would his name come up? ....... unless there is truth to the story?

How can you possibly decide to trust any of the scores or hundreds of persons who pass through this forum daily? What about the potential uncountable individuals who can retreive this information simply by googling your name and any of a variety of search words?

Your expectation of privacy is unreasonable. Many of us do not post information about our families; I know that I don't. To make a point, I might refer to "the misses"; in the past I might have referred to her as Mrs. Papi or as Mami de Alejo. The PBH'ers on here that I have met have also met her. I have also met many of their significant others. They don't talk about mine; I don't talk about theirs.

You are well intentioned Greg and I can tell from your posts that he have a great pride for your son and a love for your wife that many would envy. Kudos to you. But keep it private or write in genaralities. We can understand what you say if you don't get into the details of your interactions with your loved ones.

Good luck to you.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Nov 6, 2009, 12:53:

Greg,

You really need to be careful what you post on the site. It's not really a matter of trust amongst PBH members. Not only are your posts available to anyone that views PBH, but they are indexed and cached on Google and other search engines. If you don't want your comments to be public, don't post them. If there are any past comments that have personal information that you'd like removed, let me know and I will discuss it with the other mods.

Please don't start a huge fight with others over something as unimportant as someone poking fun at your name. You are really being oversensitive about that. Now if you see others posting insults or personal attacks that are really over the line, then please flag the comments or contact a mod and we will deal with the comment and the poster.

That is not nice Brians and you are breaking the rules of the forum!! And then you attack me more and say I took some picture in front of the Co-op - maybe because co-ops are in lower estrato. Not only have I never taken a picture in front of any "Co-op" I WOULD NEVER DO THAT BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SEEM VERY INTERESTING!!! So STOP ATTACKING ME!"

or

Greg says: "Brians, I don't appreciate you saying I am an irresponsible parent -- I realize you are just trying to give me a "heads up" about the dangers of the internet - but I am comfortable with the decisions I have made regarding that. Just because we see it differently doesn't make me irresponsible."
