How to reconcile the goals of PBH: Being informative AND social - a suggestion: LET'S CHAT

Whilst, basically, PBH is at heart an informative forum whose primary purpose is to share information, travel reports and pictures, it has now become hijacked by a dozen or so bored posters (mainly ex-pats) who consider it to be as their own sandbox and whose sole objective appear to be:

- drive away all the newbies with their “silly” questions which have already been asked so many times
- consider themselves to be THE only Colombian experts on whatever subject is posted

A genuine query answered with disdain. I genuinely feel sorry for the original poster who thought that, by joining PBH, he would/could obtain a genuine answer to his problem. Shame on those who forgot what it is to be lost in Colombia.

Most of the remaining threads have also become a joke. Utterly hijacked by the bored ex-pats whose sole aim is not to be helpful, but to try to show how much they know about Colombia. And often trying to impose their narrow points of view, scratching their respective backs, and preventing any meaningful debate scaring away any genuine person wishing to take part in it.

Whilst, in the past, PBH got a reputation for being a helpful, informative and helpful forum, it is now slowly, but surely, becoming more and more irrelevant.

True, it is perfectly understandable that a successful forum such as PBH must serve two purposes:

- its original purpose where travelers can share their experience and help out other travelers

- become a social forum where posters can communicate among themselves without spoiling the informative threads

What is certain is that, right now, both aims appear to be incompatible and that PBH has a serious problem of identity.

How do you reconcile both purposes of this forum?

I suggest that a CHAT feature be implemented.

If members wish to chat among themselves, arguing or not among themselves, then let them do so within a live CHAT facility.

A CHAT room could be an ideal way to vent off steam without affecting the PBH informative threads.

By definition, a CHAT room is temporary. Whatever is written here will not be remembered and will nor influence the Google rankings of PBH. This chat room wouldn’t have to be necessarily moderated (although moderators could always weigh in and participate).

The purpose of a CHAT room is to be temporary. To share thoughts and opinions that, at the end of the day, will never be recorded and thus will never be permanent. A private and temporary room where PBH can vent off steam without affecting the pertinence of the permanent posted threads in the main PBH forums.

Please post here your thoughts about such a CHAT facility – whether you’re for or against it.

The point is not to agree or not with me, it’s simply to provide an alternative to enrich the PBH forum and to ensure that it can fulfill its purpose of being AT THE SAME TIME an informative forum AND a social forum.

Judging from his initial reaction (and this what matters), the OP certainly didn't like the the first reactions of PBH posters. I can understand why.

Anyway, this thead is whether you'd like a live CHAT feature to be implemented on PBH....

As someone who was the manager of the company who at one point provided the majority of the chat rooms on the planet. Including Paramount, Universal, RCN, NPR, and to about 15,000 companies around the world, chat rooms have always been best for discussions when you posted a time and a topic and had a guest speaker.

Otherwise they are just troll fodder. And have been that way since 2003.

It is always wise to keep a transcript of a chat room for liability purposes. The majority of the software logs it.

I honestly do not think poor but happy has enough members online simultaneously to support it. You would need to look at the web logs to see if enough users were on simultaneously.

We are required to be civil on this site and there are people who are not. A "chat" can become a war and drag down the rest of the site. Not enough members who are online simultaneously. But wait I already said that.

PBH does not worry about liability anyway, because mods delete things that thin skinned members do not like, or edit the posts into oblivion. There is nothing permanent about a post here. PBH is a meritocracy and plays favorites.

Although I enjoy the site, I do not think a chat room would add anything to it.

Darloup, how would a chat room be better? Your postulation is that threads get ruined by people, but your proposal is to create another wholly unmoderated area. You see the folly in that right? With no moderation you'd have spammers, trolls, and flame wars well beyond what you've got now. If you wanted it moderated I doubt you'll get support for that either since that would create a whole new level of responsibilities for the PBH mods.

What you're proposing is similar to cops recognizing that a lot of DWIs are happening on the roads, so they plan to build a road where they don't patrol. I mean yup, DWIs will decrease, but I can't see how that'd be a good thing.

Actually sapo, has more insight into Colombia than most expats here, and while I don't always agree with his analysis of the situation, I always look forward to reading his opinions, as the stuff he posts is usually spot on and not common knowledge for the casual observer.

An unmoderated area is exactly the kind of thing PBh needs: All comments will be deleted after a few hours. Nothing will last. All comments will end up in a black hole after a few hours. So who cares if trolls abound? (no to mention the fact that PBH should control the inscription process). So who really cares whatever is being said in this chat feature as long as it is not being permanently recorded in the forum?

Whats makes PBH is the Ex-pats, especially the ones who really know about Colombia, although they can be caustic, they generally are good people with wicked senses of humor.

And what is wrong with people wanting to meet up? They can exchange thoughts, stories, tip a few beers, and form solid friendships with each other.

Posting a thread about a meet up is a great thing.

I met Johnny2009 passing through the Bogota airport to drop off something he needed from the states. I did not know him, he did not know me, yet trusted me to bring a package, and I did. And you know what, on my way back next week he was generous enough to offer me his couch and we are going to go out on the town. Would not have been possible unless for PBH.

I am looking forward to meeting Sapo, PCL, OTM, Babygirl, Anti, and a ton of other people. Hell Clavo and I used to argue all the time, but we get along now. I look forward to meeting him.

Colombians love to get together and have a party, so why should ex pats not follow in that tradition?

Who gives a fock about a dozen expats who claim to seat on the right side of God and are unwilling to share their sandbox in Colombia? Disillusioned persons and, for some unknown reason, bitter persons, always advising to "beat the system" rather than join it.

Interestingly enough, the Colombian members of this forum have always been more helpful and always willing to help. They don't view new settlers as competion and, quite the opposite, they are ready to accept them since they realize that these persons, for all their fault, are genuine and are true lovers of Colombia.

There is nothing wrong in ex-pats wishing to meet each others. All I ever said was that it was not one of my priorities and I'd rather meet persons on an individual basis and on their own merits - not just because they are expats.

Being an expat myself doesn't give me a God-given right to have affinities with other expacts in Colombia. This is as superficial as you can get.

Back on topic: yes, Darloup and I discussed the chatroom idea earlier last night and I have always thought that it might be a good idea. I know that Peter does not support the idea and it probably never will happen here, but I believe it would serve the purpose of letting some steam off.Almost every thread on informative issues turns into a chatroom in slow motion after perhaps 10-15 initial comments, with the local expat community trying to outwit each other in wisecracking.

I just wonder if this discussion had been more fruitful if the OP had been made by, say, just anybody else except Darloup or Greg.

Also, the personal attacks stop here. This was the last time I employed temporary suspension on certain members who have been suspended before and quite recently.

This is a horrible idea and Peter is right. I believe it would be the end of PBH and that would be sad. There are many threads that wander off of the topic and some of them are the best. Who cares as long as we are civil. Darloup iniciated the incivility in this thread shortly after he started it because no one liked the idea or at least the people who could see reason and know the damage that would be done. He asked for opinions and he got the unexpected which angered him. You know me and my story and I have learned from my past. I beg you to re-think this. The anger was not because of Darloup but because of the idea and there lies the difference. Darloup and you are both obviosly intelligent and excellent writers but words are easily misunderstood especially in English when something is written in sarcasm. Please do not do this I ask as a member and as my gratitude to Peter for being Peter and a good guy with a good heart. Darloup's intentions are good but the idea is a bad one. Join one of the other Colombian sites with the chat feature. That is why I am no longer there or associated with any of them. Peter is right on this one and no one deserves fish bowl time. Sapo and especially Antithesis went hard at him and not only him but also Greg Yohn. The suspensions would have been meriteded on the grounds of personal attacks on Greg Yohn alone, without even involving the sustained verbal harrassment that Darloup was victim of. There's no excuse for that. The people who got suspended KNEW they were getting the suspension, they were WELL AWARE that they broke the rules and they did it in defiance andputting themselves above the forum policies, for whatever reasons I can't imagine, perhaps because they think they are smarter or better persons than the ones they attacked. They really gave me no alternative than do my job. I feel bad about it because that verbal barrage should have NEVER been allowed to run that far. I know Bill was deleting it before me and Kat too, but later on at night when the mods were not reading any longer it went totally crazy. It should have been closed for comments after the first unfriendly exchange.
